Life and Work with Jennifer Starr

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Starr.

Jennifer, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
For as long as I can remember, I have always been planning an “event” of some kind. Life is more fun with exciting plans ahead right? That’s just kind of the way my heart beats and I’m completely obsessed with all the parts of the process that turn ordinary moments into MAGIC.

After graduating from Arizona State University I ventured out to finally land my dream job. The truth is… it wasn’t as easy I had imagined it would be. I soon realized that in order to be a true professional in the Wedding Planning Industry you needed lots of experience.

After a few odd jobs, I finally landed my first “real” professional job as a Membership Concierge at a Private Golf and Country Club. For many long hours, life lessons, and hard work… eventually, I was promoted to the Private Events Director. This meant, I was responsible for selling over a million dollars in revenue and held responsible for several weddings (our record year being 106 weddings, yes in one year!)

Eventually, after many years in this position, I found myself yearning to be able to work more closing with my clients in ALL aspects of their wedding planning journey. And in February of 2011 (while still holding my corporate position), I officially launched J.Starr Stylized Weddings. It was not to long after that I realized I was pregnant with my twin girls! To which I eventually left my corporate job to chase both my personal & professional dreams of being a mama and owning a wedding planning business.

Has it been a smooth road?
I often laugh at the irony of my life. Raising babies and building a business (in a “picture perfect” beautifully styled industry) at the same time has definitely been the definition of opposite extremes.

But through this experience, I’ve learned that some of life’s most beautiful experiences aren’t always the ones that can be planned for.

For any woman starting out on their professional journeys, I encourage you to be yourself ~ despite your fears and weaknesses. Because “what comes from the heart, touches the heart” and that’s where the real success is. It may take you a little longer on your journey, but your life will feel so much fuller in the long run.

There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
Network until “networking” doesn’t feel like “networking” anymore. Relationship building is everything in the business. Always remember that there is always something to learn from any person that you meet.
