Life and Work with Heather Usher

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Usher.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Lots of trial and error got me where I am today. I was enrolled in beauty school at 19 and decided I wasn’t really into college at the time so I didn’t finish. After a few years of working in the restaurant industry, I knew I wanted to go back. Enrolled again and almost didn’t finish my last two months out but, with the help and push from my parents, I finally graduated beauty school. I assisted a salon owner for a while, took and continue to take classes for further education, moved to Arizona from North Carolina and can now say I am now my own boss. It is hard work but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I am continuously learning new things every single day.

Has it been a smooth road?
No road is ever easy and for me, it was bumpy with a lot of challenges. My struggles were there because I chose to hang out with friends, party and put school last. Now, that I am 29, I can shake my head at my younger self but would never change my journey.

My advice is to always enjoy the journey but be smart. Don’t be scared to say no sometimes and make sure you put your priorities first.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a hairstylist, that specializes in blondes, bridal hair, and styling. I’m not known for anything in particular but I can tell you that I love what I do. Attitude and customer service is everything. I always try to have a positive attitude, smiling face, personable approach and welcoming space for my clients… I believe that having that type of atmosphere really makes a difference.

What sets me apart from others is my drive to always help others in the industry. I’m lucky enough to work along the side of other amazing and talented artists for all sorts of fashion shows and events. If I can help others, I will do it in a heartbeat.

Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
Honestly, I don’t feel like there are any barriers in the cosmetics/hair/beauty industry or none that I have seen. The only thing that would be a barrier in my eyes would be unkindness in our field. I believe as artists, it is important to build each other up, encourage, compliment and be kind to others in the industry. Some may be starting out, maybe some are hitting a block in their career or maybe they are just awesome and you want to use them as your “goal” or maybe they just inspire you. We should always lift each other up. It can go such a long way.
