Life and Work with Francesca Perrelli

Today we’d like to introduce you to Francesca Perrelli.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As far back as I can remember, I have had an eye for creativity. My true beginning as a photographer began in the 5th grade; I was school historian and paraded around campus with a Canon, capturing all elementary events. I absolutely loved the feeling of attending all events and being able to capture the action. In 7th grade, I was voted historian once again for my school and carried out this position to the fullest, creating school scrapbooks filled with my photos. After this school year, I laid my photography career to rest to pursue sports. It wasn’t until my first year at Arizona State University when I reconnected with my passion and love for creating photos. I took a black and white film photography class and was able to physically create my own photographs through hours of lab work each week. Film taught me a ton about my camera and about patience; after all, developing film yourself is not the quickest or easiest of processes. My sorority sisters at the time were very supportive and started modeling for my shoots, and my clientele grew upwards from there. I was being contacted weekly by people who wanted to star in a shoot of mine, and I soon started connecting with other photographers to collaborate on projects. I moved on from film and purchased my first DSLR the following summer, and my photography has grown vastly ever since. Today, I have a passion for shooting fashion and modern lifestyles. I have found many opportunities in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area for my photography by networking with local residents. I am very excited to see what the future holds for my career, it only goes up from here!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I believe that if the road is smooth, you’re on the wrong road. Growth doesn’t come without challenges and obstacles to learning from. In my photography journey, I struggled a lot with film, whether it was exposing my film on accident in the development process or shooting at the wrong settings and getting low-quality photos. I also struggled with comparing my work to the work of others, which is the worst thing to do. My advice is to find comfort in being unique and having your own style, it’s what is going to differentiate you from your competitors. For all young women who are just starting their journey, give it your energy and your passion and let that carry you through new doors. Move at your own pace and focus on your own successes.

Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I don’t take photos, I MAKE photos. I specialize in fashion and portrait photography, and each of my photos has my own personalized style in it. Rather than shooting “basic” or “general” photos, I enjoy creating and directing my own shoots. From the model to the outfit to the accessories to the set, my work is at my best when I pick it all out myself. My creativity and my vision is what sets me apart from all others; no one can recreate or copy what I see in my mind and can create through my lens. I am most proud of my growth and development in my edits and staging. Each shoot, I find myself getting better at bringing my visions to life and doing so efficiently.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
I really enjoy reading advice books, as there is always room for development. As for apps, Instagram is my go-to for inspiration. At times, this app can be very overwhelming, but knowing how to use it in positive ways helps me develop my craft.
