Life and Work with Dunia Polis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dunia Polis.

Dunia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I moved out to Arizona three years ago, I went back and forth from California to Phoenix, and finally decided to make Phoenix my permanent home because I knew I could not keep running away every time a problem occurred in my life. I had a hard time when I first came out here, I was involved with the wrong people, found myself always being in uncomfortable situations, I was learning to be away from my parents for the first time and I just overall felt very alone and unhappy. But I never showed it, I knew I had to turn things around so, I finally decided to use my passion in makeup artistry and the beauty industry as something more deeper than just an exterior thing, I wanted to help a woman feel beautiful and confident from the inside out. I wanted women to love themselves for who they were and not what society wanted them to be, I didn’t want women to hide behind all the makeup and insecurities. So, I worked on teaching woman of all ages, step by step of skin care application and makeup application, simplifying it, making it fun, instilling the importance of “less is more” being confident and practicing self-love. I wanted to add value to everyone’s life I crossed paths with. And that’s where I’m at today, the wrong people became the people I needed to get me to where I’m at today, they broke me down to the point that I never wanted anyone to feel the way I felt and to focus all my energy in making everything and everyone around me feel beautiful and I did that through my own experiences, and showing people that I too had insecurities, flaws, fears, etc. I have used my artistic skills in allowing women to be comfortable in their own skin by not selling them a product but teaching them the techniques, product knowledge, and tools to utilize in their everyday life to be of love and confidence to themselves and not having to conform to society’s definition of beauty.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Tons of struggles, I got judged a lot for being myself, for not caring what others had to say, for keeping a low pro and just getting out of the party scene and focusing on myself and my career. But that is what made me realize, that, without these challenges, obstacles, I would never grow and evolve in life. I knew that anytime I was uncomfortable, it just meant I was growing, I was learning, I was evolving. We can’t expect things to just happen if we don’t learn how to handle situations that are challenging and frightening for us, we have to push through all of it. If you are someone who is just starting, I want you to enjoy the process, don’t look at where anyone else is in their life, to just focus on yourself, to know there will be days you will want to give up because you think it’s impossible or you don’t have the resources. But it’s not impossible, and the resources are always there if you ask and look and trust the process, you will find everything you need to get to where you want to be in your life. I am a firm believer in manifesting your true desires. Believe in yourself and the greatness you can achieve and it will all be there for you. It sounds cliché, but you would be so surprised by what you can achieve when you block out the outside noise and trust our inner wisdom. I want women to know real life is not social media because people don’t go around posting their trials and tribulations on Instagram. We all have battles and struggles and we are all human, so don’t ever get discouraged with what you may think is that lavish lifestyle you see on social media, focus on who you want to become and what you want to project to others.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I do hair and makeup, but I specialize in makeup artistry. I also bartend on the side which helps me connect with more people and grow my clientele. I would say I’m known for my one on one and group makeup lessons. am most proud of just being my authentic self as a makeup artist, and teaching woman all about the products and techniques, helping them perfect they’re everyday makeup routine while learning how to simplify it all And enjoying the products they purchase. What sets me aside from others, is I humble myself in all that I’ve learned, gained and achieved and I want everyone to succeed!

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
I feel as though women can adapt to changes quickly, and are able to collaborate well with other brands, businesses, people, etc. Because they tend to share common values and visions. They are empathetic in ways of understanding cultural differences and having to walk in someone else’s shoes. So, I could honestly say any position that requires leadership is a great opportunity for women out there. Women are born to lead!! And will find great success in doing so!
