Life and Work with Dr. Sarah C. Bennett, NMD

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Sarah C. Bennett, NMD.

Dr. Bennett, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up gardening with my parents, watching my mother grow herbs, and make tinctures for various health benefits. Both of my parents raised me with the belief that your body has everything it needs to heal provided the proper environment. I guess it’s not surprised that I ended up becoming a naturopathic doctor.

Growing up in Indiana provided little access to anything other than traditional medicine.

Although, I have always been interested in health and psychology, I felt conflicted about this style of health care. What about nutrition, or the herbal tinctures I learned about growing up?

As I got older, I began to see close friends and family members brushed off or treated inappropriately. I saw women being told they were just depressed and being prescribed anti-depressants when they really just had hypothyroidism, and men prescribed statins without any mention of diet and lifestyle. I myself became sick, having extreme fatigue, depression, and inability to concentrate. I found that when I went to the doctor I was provided no solutions, just told: “everything looks normal.” This repeated exposure to these types of stories drew me towards medicine. It created a desire to basically do it better.

I ended up discovering naturopathic medicine on my own which combined my love of medicine, nutrition, and lifestyle. The naturopathic model appealed to me as a well- rounded approach to health.

After graduating from SCNM, and completing my primary care residency at Keystone Natural Family Medicine, I decided to start my own practice, Natural Med Doc. I realized my passion lies in anti-aging and bio-identical hormone replacement therapy. For me, the anti-aging field is exciting, due to the ability to influence longevity and quality of life. The field is rapidly growing and provides many of the most cutting edge therapies.

Has it been a smooth road?
As with any journey, I faced my share of struggles. I entered the school while still addressing my own health concerns, and although passionate for the topics being learned I found the rigors of the curriculum hard to keep up with at times. I as well as many of my colleages encountered worsening health throughout the school. I learned that to maintain sanity and health, I had to make sure I was keeping a regular sleep cycle, exercising at least four times per week, and taking breaks for the constant stress to socialize and get out in nature. I often remind myself to hold true to these recommendations as I grow my practice.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Natural Med Doc – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Natural Med Doc is an anti-aging clinic. I am especially passionate about bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, as it provides a dramatic improvement in the quality of life as well as is preventative for many disease processes.

I also specialize in regenerative joint injections, currently offering Prolo, PRP, and amniotic fluid joint injections. I am partial to regenerative injections as a treatment of pain because it is truly stimulating your body’s own healing process, and can help people to avoid surgeries or narcotic treatments.

In addition to regenerative injections, and bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, I provide medical aesthetic procedures, including Botox, dermal fillers, microneedling with PRP, and more. I enjoy providing these aesthetic procedures, as I believe that loving the way you look enhances the quality of life.

There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
I can not emphasize enough how important it is to have a mentor. I believe that no matter what field you are in mentorship will help you to learn and grow in your field at an exponential rate. In any school or field, you will begin to learn through classes, extracurricular activities, and speaking to peers who the leaders of the field are.

I met my first mentor, Dr. Kristen Bishop, NMD at on a trip to Washington DC to lobby for naturopathic medicine licensure. He professionalism, intelligence, and confidence appealed to me as an insecure student. I later shadowed at her clinic and later applied to her residency and got the job.

As a student or someone who is new in the field it is easy to feel intimidated, or like your desired mentor is out of reach. Dont! Ask to shadow, apply for a job, just be persistent.
