Today we’d like to introduce you to Destiny Marquez.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Destiny. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My love for this industry first began when I was a kid, from a very young age I was hair obsessed, anything and everything hair I immersed myself in it. In high school, I attended a technical school called The East Valley Institute of Technology where I studied Cosmetology part-time and fell in love. As the years went on, my passion behind the chair grew with each day, that passion would soon fuel the drive I needed to succeed. In 2016, I moved to Colorado where I would soon find out I needed more Cosmetology hours to obtain my Cosmetology License. I went back to hair school at the Toni & Guy Hairdressing Academy, but this time I saw the beauty and artistry in the career I was on the verge of embarking. I had the opportunity to obtain a world-renowned education, to grow and learn from the best of the best. Toni & Guy would become the home that would mold and groom me to be the stylist I am today. I am so thankful for the opportunities and people that have helped me become the person I am. The day I turned 23, I decided to “jump” and leave the only place I considered to be home behind the chair. I pursued the thrill and hard work of owning my very own business. Going into 2019, I started my own business with my husband called Shear Delicacy Styling.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey was not perfect or ideal by far, nothing is ever as simple as it seems but the key is to keep pushing through and persevering! Before I had graduated high school, I was told that I was missing an extra math credit that was required to graduate. I dreaded math and was left to figure it out on an online math class because it was so late in the semester. Fast forward to the end of the semester, before graduation and I failed to pass the class. I had to retake the class which would mean I was not allowed to graduate or walk with my class. I was eighteen when that happened and it was devastating and a burden for me. A dream that I held close to my heart for years, worked so hard for my entire life, was ripped away from me. At this point, I could have chosen to give up, I could have walked away. Instead, I retook the class (still online only) and after graduation, I passed it. I went back to EVIT to finish my cosmetology hours and did everything in my power to gain a license. Unfortunately, I faced more obstacles to receive my license in Arizona. That would also be when I moved back to Colorado. In Colorado, I was shown a completely different side of the industry I had already loved and yearned to be a part of. If not for my experience at the Toni & Guy Hairdressing Academy, I would not be where I am today. Looking back, I needed to go back to Cosmetology school for the greater plan that I could not see. I say if you have a dream and desire on your heart, stop at nothing to get there. Be stubborn in the pursuit of your dreams! You just have to keep striving for more and stay fixated on why you started and what fuels your purpose to never quit.

Who have you been inspired by?
Wow, that is a hard question! I am inspired by so many beautiful women in my life! My mom and my aunty Fran have always inspired me, they’ve always taught me what it meant to have faith and trust in God, to love wholeheartedly and fearlessly. My grandma inspires me because she has shown me what it means to love unconditionally. My sister has always inspired me with her ability to be the truest version of herself and taught me how special it is to be your own person. My mother in law has always been a consistent inspiration to me for her strength. I am inspired by the strength and love that she expresses day in and day out.
