Today we’d like to introduce you to Destany Bonner.
Destany, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?Hair has always been my passion..since, as long as I can remember. Growing up I’ve never really had anyone teach me how exactly how to care for my own hair. So, I’ve learned a lot through trial an error doing my hair, as well as practicing on my dolls hair. Then in middle school, I had my first client! I Was SOOO EXCITED! I don’t remember how much I got that day. I just remember coming to the realization that I could get paid to do something I TRULY LOVE. I would work on family, and friends throughout school, and made it my goal to one day be a Cosmetologist. After I finished high school, I took a little break from school. Somehow my focused switched from really wanting to go to cosmetology school, to wanting to being able to care for myself. A few months after completing high school, I found a job and bought my first car. At that time in my life, I had just moved out. There would be times were I would have no money.
A year after starting my job ,things were finally starting to some around. I had some money saved up and was back on my feet. So, I started looking into different cosmetology schools. In March of 2014, I had signed up for school! My job at the time, was kind enough to work with me on my school schedule. I would attend school in the morning and work later in the evening. Then, on my days off, I would stay at school longer. This went on until I completed cosmetology school in May of 2015. However, after completing cosmetology school I had exhausted myself. So I took a long needed break, and just focused on work and taking care of myself physically. Although,I still was doing hair throughout that time. After about six months, I decided it was time to take my state boards. I studied, studied, and studied. In 2016, I became a licensed cosmetologist! The feeling was surreal!! By the end of 2016, I decide that I wanted to pursue my career in Hair full-time. So, I quit my job.
Fast forward to 2018, I opened my business called Beautéce; where I specialize in Natural Hair Care, Protective Styling, Braids and Weaves. All of my services are specially designed for each individual client. My goal is to help and educate each of my client’s, as well as to create an environment where anyone can come and relax to get a service done.
It has officially been one year since I’ve opened my business and I’m ready to continue my journey!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. There would be times were I would wonder were my next meal would come from, or how I would pay any of my bills. I remember my first car, the floors would flood when it rained, so I got rid of it.Thankfully, I had help getting to and from work until I was able to save up for another car. Once I bought another car I started Cosmetology School. When I started school, I wasn’t able to pay for all of it. I did qualify for a student grant but it didn’t cover all of the school expenses. So I paid out of pocket. Then once again living from pay check to pay check.
My number ONE advice is to NEVER GIVE UP, Always Believe In Yourself! The moment you start doubting yourself, remember how far you’ve come! Surround yourself around family and friends who truly care about your well being. As well as, surrounding yourself around POSITIVE people who will encourage you.
Please tell us about what you do.
I specialize in Hair Care. I offer services such as Protective Styling, Braids, Weaves, Wigs, and some Loc services as well. The one thing that I am most proud is creating the name Beautéce. When you say “Beautéce” it’s a reminder “You Are Beautiful, Your Hair is Beautiful”. I genuinely LOVE doing hair. So when my clients sit in my chair, their hair will get all the love it can get!
