Life and Work with Cydnii Cherny

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cydnii Cherny.

Cydnii, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have been interested in the beauty industry for as long as I can remember. It’s constantly evolving and there is plenty of opportunities to make things your own. Unfortunately, certain family members talked me out of pursuing this passion for far too long. After years of soul searching and finding who I was, and what I wanted, my path led me back to the beauty industry time and time again. Starting with an interest in hair, leading to an interest in makeup, which helped develop my passion for skin care. Flawless makeup depends on the canvas. I spent all my free time researching skin and skin care ingredients, realizing that I enjoyed caring for my skin more than putting on the makeup to cover it up. My new hobby quickly turned into my obsession! A year or so down the road, a friend of mine told me about the esthetics school she had attended, opening my eyes to the idea of turning my obsession into a career.

I researched and toured a few schools in my area. When I walked into SWINA, it was love at first sight! I enrolled within a week of touring the school and began my education a few months later. Learning everything there is to know about the skin and skin care itself made me realize that I had absolutely made the right decision. The following nine months were the best months of my life. Amazing instructors, the best education, hands-on practice treating clients in the student clinic, all completed just in time for the birth of my first child. Now, I will be able to raise my daughter to always follow her heart and pursue what makes her happy, while leading by example.

I am so excited to have finally finished my education. In the weeks to follow, I will be taking all of my state boards and completing the licensing process. I can’t wait to get started working in a spa near you!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As cliche as it sounds, my biggest obstacle was myself. I often put the blame on the family members who talked me out of pursuing what I knew I would love, but in reality, I’m the one who made the decision to listen to them.

My advice is to always stay true to yourself. You know what you want and what you are capable of better than anyone else. Don’t let others’ opinions shake the confidence you have in yourself. Life is too short to work a job you don’t love. As soon as you find what you love to do, run with it. And if you haven’t found what you love to do yet, don’t worry. One day, you’ll find it. For now, just take the time to learn more about yourself.

Please tell us about your work.
Estheticians provide skin treatments, hair removal, and other processes to help men and women look and feel their best. Whether it’s a relaxing facial or an intense wax session, clients leave feeling like a brand new version of themselves. My goal is to help each client feel more confident and beautiful in the skin they’re in!

Many estheticians focus on the treatment itself and selling products. Personally, I like to focus on educating my clients. While receiving facials and other skin care treatments are essential to achieving desired results, knowledge of how to continue care at home contributes to 80% of the results a client will achieve. Knowledge is power, and I’ve learned that clients appreciate having the power to create change in their skin.

Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
Women today face many barriers when it comes to leadership, but I feel that one of the most unfortunate barriers can be other women. It can be difficult to gain the support of other women when we’re so quick to tear each other down. My industry is primarily composed of women, so it can get competitive when it doesn’t need to be. We all have something unique to offer and there’s plenty of clients to go around. Women would be unstoppable if we built a sisterhood to uplift and empower one another.
