Life and Work with Charly Wilson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charly Wilson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Charly. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My story was not one of growing up wanting to be a hairstylist. I was searching for something creative I would be working with my hands and with people, and kind of fell into hairstyling. I decided to give it a shot and now, I love it! I’m so thankful I took a risk and couldn’t see myself doing anything else.

Has it been a smooth road?
Because I took a blind leap of faith towards this career, I really had to start at square one. I have curly hair and grew up always wearing it curly so in beauty school, I had to learn simple things like how to curl hair. I think this gave me the drive to learn as much as a could as fast as I could. Since I’ve had my license and been working at Hush Salon and Day Spa, I have been able to overcome any obstacles with the help of the salon team and my bosses. I would encourage everyone in this industry to participate in an internship/apprenticeship and allow someone to formally educate and shape you as a stylist. You will be more comfortable and confident as a newbie. I would also say to go shadow at different salons! Feel the vibes, get to know the stylists and receptionist and get a feel to see if you are a good fit there. Being a good fit at a salon is an integral part of a hairstylist’s career.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
Like I said previously, I have naturally curly hair. I love wearing it curly and I encourage others who have a natural wave and curl to wear it that way. One of my favorite things to do is to help people walk through the process of bringing their curl back and wearing it natural. I also do perms, not like the 80’s crazy perms (although I can make that happen if it is requested), but something that can give those who have straight hair or not too much texture some wave and/or curl. Or for curly girls who have consistently flat spots in certain places, perms can make that go away!

I also specialize in blonding and fashion colors. I enjoy giving lots of highlights and helping blend gray, as well as keeping the hair’s integrity. Same with fashion colors, the blues and purples and reds and such, those are lots of fun but also need good at home care. I provide a system to help with that and keep the color for as long as possible.

I love what I do, as do hopefully many of us. But I also LOVE people. And because of that, I am willing to listen, build a good relationship and get the best result based on each individual. Plus, the salon visit should be fun! And I do my best to make that happen each time.

Who have you been inspired by?
For starters, my mom is my biggest female inspiration. She is an extremely hard worker who thinks of others first (literally all of the time) and who deeply values character. She is someone who continues to learn every single day from every source she can (she sometimes claims even I teach her stuff ;)) She continues to influence me to be the best version of myself.

My other inspirations are my salon owners. I have three female owners who work the hardest in the entire salon and who lead our team with passion, excitement, and patience. Anyone who leads a team of 15-20 women that actually get along and enjoy coming into work deserves a huge prize!
