Today we’d like to introduce you to Chardai Fisher.
Chardai, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a 33-year-old woman who carries many roles. Mom, salon owner, and educator. I got my start when I was 8 to 18 years old assisting my mom in her salon in my home town Memphis, TN. Shortly after that, I went to college on a cross country and track and field scholarship to a small school on the border of Virginia and Tennessee. The small liberal arts school was located in Bristol, VA. Called Virginia interment. There, I still found myself doing girl’s hair whenever I found some free time. Two years later, I am living in Covington, GA with my aunt and they enroll me in Empire beauty school in Dunwoody, GA, which was an hour away but I was young and determined. I went to school full time and completed in a year.
In 2006, I was licensed and from there, I opened my own little studio in a building called salons of Atlanta and I began to build my clientele and work as a freelance artist on various gigs. I decided that I didn’t just want to stand behind the chair, I wanted to do education as well. So, I made the decision to go back to the Empire and get my educators license, which was another nine months of school. Shortly after finishing, I moved to my forever home, Arizona. When I came, I only planned on being here for one year to fulfill my contract teaching and going back to my life in Atlanta. Working as a full-time educator, I knew that I wanted more and applied to every big brand that was out there. That I remembered seeing at the hair shows.
One day, I decided to take my students to a field trip to look at the local beauty supply store Cosmo prof and the manager there asked me was I looking to work for a brand. I’m like, yes, this is my big chance she told me that there was a brand hiring by the name of Pravana and I was thinking I am going to be totally famous. I rushed home, I sent an email and thinking, oh my god, this is my big break, this is finally what I want to do, education for a major brand. I rushed home and kept calling the hotline because hotspot on calls was like the most important thing back then and never got through. So, months later, I was home sick and I sent an email, my life changed here. Eight years later, still working for the brand and have dumb various roles and they have afforded me to be able to open up my dreams along Cosmoholic Salon LLC. In the midst of my crazy career, I managed to get married and have a lovely daughter and live in my dreams.
Has it been a smooth road?
A smooth roll, haha, that’s funny, no, has it been the first few years, I really struggled because I knew that I wanted to do this career. I pretty much can only afford Ramen noodles, Pringles and bottled water and I went out with my girlfriends every other Friday night for happy hour. Five dollar Martinis in a picture for 20, so pretty much my phone but it was only $20 when I moved here to Arizona, I was a 23-year-old young girl working at a full-time job teaching people that were between the age of 18 through 65 and that was an emotional struggle. Once I got my shower Pravana, I had to learn how to manage myself because you know you go to the training to learn how to do your job and then, you are kind of your own boss and unless you do something wrong and now, that Salon Owner is a completely the best, I have employees, I have payroll, I have health insurance, all of these things that I can’t say, I wasn’t prepared for, but before I was working in the studio all alone by myself, so it’s been fun.
Piece of advice that I would give a young woman pursuing this career is stick with it, you’re going to struggle in the beginning, but like me, 13 years later, I own a salon, I’ve purchased the house, I’ve got a car, I’m able to take sick days off with my daughter sick, I’m able to go visit a family member if they need me, I do have the flexibility to be able to do anything in, the skies the limit.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Cosmoholic Salon LLC and Pravana International – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
So, behind the chair, I do a lot of hair extensions for people that have balding traction, alopecia, scarring alopecia and I also color it to make it look as natural as possible. I also have my clients, they have 100% glitter as I say but they’re really gray and I do lotta gray coverage with highlighting. I also run a hair salon, I have five employees. Three hairstylists a receptionist, a nail tech, and a skin care specialist and outside of the salon, I am an art educator for Pravana and also a brand manager and I just recently got the role of assistant manager for a model room for the show season, so my day today, there is visiting salons make sure they’re happy with our product going to do store demos I get to travel from state to state and work in the model room and I teach advanced classes. Think that I’m most proud of our my roles in the Pravana company, I’ve been with them pretty much my entire adult life. I feel and the skies the limit, they are they allowed me to do what I’m good at and I see what I’m good at and put me in those roles in my salon. I am just proud to be open we open October 14, 2017, so I’m pretty happy about that. And the reason why I smile every day is my daughter, Ayla, I am a proud mom, she does have down syndrome and she’s beating every artist been placed in front of her and that is my greatest accomplishment. What sets me apart is I’m a versatile stylist, I am truly a woman’s hairdresser, but my client is anywhere from eight years old to 80 years old, so I can do the little girl hair, I can do the mature one. Here, I can knock out the fantasy colors, I can do hair extensions, I can serve his hair loss, so I am a very versatile stylist.
Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
Yes, my mom was still the best behind the chair and she is an entrepreneur and taught me that I can only depend on myself to make the life that I want and I also have my granddad which is why I call him my papa and he is the biggest part of my life to teach me self love and dedication. And there are my aunts, of course, they have always been there to support me through anything that I need it or want, so yeah.
