Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Treat.
Angela, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I decided to start Hand Treated Home after I had been working in a corporate job for a few years, and decided that I needed a creative outlet. I had always enjoyed being creative and realized that it was completely missing from my life. I knew that whatever I pursued I wanted to make it into a business for myself, so I started thinking up different ideas, and finally landed on sign making. It was the perfect mix of my business background, my love for DIY, and an outlet for my creativity. Finally Hand Treated Home was born, I officially launched my shop website in September of 2018 and ever since I have given 100% to my business and have enjoyed watching it grow.
Has it been a smooth road?
Starting and owning my own business has definitely not been easy. Yes, most days I love what I do and still cannot believe I am a business owner. However, there are many days where I feel like giving up. Plenty of times I come across something that I don’t know how to do, or I mess up on something that I spent days working on. A lot of the time I feel discouraged from social media as well. It is very easy to play the comparison game, or to think people don’t care about what you are doing, so why even bother? When I start to feel this way, I just remember how badly I wanted to do this, and that I had originally told myself that I would be ecstatic if I even sold one sign. My advice for these situations is to keep going. Maybe you need to take a step back and reassess, but make sure to press forward. If I were to stop now, I would lose all the progress I have made. I look back to a year ago and see all that I have learned and accomplished, and that the me back then would die to be where I am now.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Hand Treated Home – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I initially started Hand Treated Home as a shop for handmade farmhouse wood signs, with the intention of eventually adding other products as well. Recently, I just added interchangeable signs, and plan to add two more products, including t-shirts, by the end of the year. With regards to my handmade wood signs, I offer both my original designs, as well as taking on custom design requests. I love being able to work with a customer to see a piece they love come to life. I pride myself on the quality of Hand Treated Home products, and would never send out an item that I am not 100% proud to put my name on. If you shop with Hand Treated Home, you are guaranteed top customer service and high quality products you will love for years to come.
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
I definitely think that social media is a huge platform that women can take full advantage of. When I first launched my website, I immediately turned to Instagram to help promote my brand and found thousands of ambitious women hustling on the platform. I was embraced by this huge community who wanted nothing more than to lift each other up and support one another in their endeavors. I have since found that with determination, you can use social media to do just about anything, From selling, to promoting, these women are creating jobs for themselves and succeeding, while fostering an accepting place for others. This is the type of ambition and camaraderie that helps propel women towards success as they carve their own path.
