Life and Work with Amanda Enger

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Enger.

Amanda, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I wasn’t that typical girl who’s dreamt of being a hair stylist since she was a little girl. I had no idea what I wanted to do after school and I had an interest in doing hair so I went to Cosmetology school and bounced around from a few salons having to start over with my clientele each time. Until I finally ended up at a salon that pushed me into becoming a booth renter. I wasn’t ready and was scared to fail miserably but I did it! I made an Instagram account just for hair and over time, I really started to grow and build that dream clientele that I’ve always wanted. It wasn’t until I became “independent” that I truly found my passion and love for what I do.

Has it been a smooth road?
It was a lot of trial and error. Figuring out what worked for me and what didn’t. You only get taught the basics of beauty school. I wish I would’ve been able to find a great stylist to assist when I first graduated and got licensed. It would’ve been so much easier and I wouldn’t have made some mistakes I did. However, I’m grateful for that because I only learned and grew from them!

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m an Artist, I specialize in hair. Specifically in “lived in” color, blonde, brondes, and brunettes.

There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
Social media is huge for marketing and it’s FREE! If you don’t have an account specifically for your work, you need to! Besides word of mouth or my clients being walking advertisement, 80% of my clientele is from Instagram.
