Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Kieft.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always had an eye for design and have felt most myself when doing something creative. I am also happiest when I’m outdoors. So, when I think about it, floral design is a pretty good fit for me.
I grew up in Arizona and will always have a soft-spot for the rugged beauty of the Sonoran Desert. After college, I lived in London for over four years, and while I loved the fast-paced London lifestyle, I would often visit the English countryside on weekends to relax and unwind. This propelled my love of flowers — an English countryside garden is truly incredible! The variety of flowers, colors, and greenery is unmatched. I became fascinated by the complex, intricate, and often strange components of flora.
I started making arrangements for family and friends, and in the back of my mind would think, “I would LOVE to do this as a career.” My first step was one that has been so valuable – learning from others. I researched the work of designers that I love, took workshops from floral designers I admire, and got my hands on as many different types of flowers as possible!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s always scary pursuing something new — but the fear is also what makes it exciting! When I started this journey, I was given some great advice: if it feels right, it probably is. It’s easy to overlook our intuition about things, especially when it comes to careers, but at the end of the day, I truly believe that hard work, passion and an open mind can help us realize almost any goal.
Please tell us about Stranger Greens.
I love creating fun, whimsical floral designs that celebrate the funky side of flora.
Stranger Greens is all about bringing a unique twist to the classic floral design. When people ask me to describe my work, I tend to say it’s, “elegantly funky.”
I also believe that the beauty of floral arrangements should not end with an event. That’s why I always strive to include a component in my designs that can be replanted and repurposed.
We offer everything from full-event service (weddings, parties, corporate events), a la carte wedding options, gifts, and monthly subscription services.
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
My advice for finding a mentor is simple – just ask! I was so pleasantly surprised at the willingness of others to answer questions and give advice. There is a spirit of collaboration over the competition in this field that I really love.
