Life and Work with Alexa Ooley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexa Ooley.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Alexa. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always dreamed of being a self-sustainable artist selling goods to locals, small shops and/or at farmers markets. However, yeah gal cannot draw a straight line or paint a circle, so I steered towards textiles. I tried to force knitting on myself for a while and even thought about learning how to crochet, but it never really clicked. Then one day, I was soul-searching in the yarn section at Joann’s when I first discovered weaving. The display was practically glowing in all of its glory. All of the colors and textures were straight talking dirty to me. I bought one of everything. Six months and 15 tapestries later, I decided to start selling my art. I was shocked at first by who supported me and insanely humbled by all the sweet love I received from my followers, two years later and I have been hooked ever since!

Has it been a smooth road?
It has been smooth, but a very windy road. I can not say it has been rough necessarily because I have absolutely loved and basked in every moment of my weaving journey. However, I am still extremely young, both in age and in my practice and as a result, I have the attention span of a goldfish. There’s still so much to learn and figure out. I have changed my business name, my overall look, my selling platforms and so much more over these last couple of years. I am still finding my groove but I am so grateful for this experience! My advice for any young gals out there looking to make things happen, DO IT! You will be shocked by who supports you, and there’s nothing more uplifting and gratifying than DOING IT!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Humble Hippy Shop – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I specialize in weaving! I have three different square looms that I weave on using yarn to create wall tapestries and every now and then I’ll add some macrame to go the extra mile. I love one-of-a-kind pieces! When someone contacts me with something they want me to make for them, I love taking off with their idea and coming up with something perfect just for them! It’s a long process (6-10 hours) and I will usually take apart my work 5-10 times throughout, but once I love it enough that it makes my heart race, I know it’s finished. There is so much love and thought that goes into each of my weavings, it makes each and every piece so unique.

What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
Nevertheless, she persisted.
