Today we’d like to introduce you to Aleck Lang.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I became a nurse on December 18, 2015. I was seven months pregnant walking in my graduation ceremony, and my dream of becoming a mama came to life two short months later. Let me take you back to when I was a little girl. My passion for all things motherhood, birth, and nursing started from the time I could understand what a baby was. My younger siblings entered the world and I’m pretty sure my mom thought she was relieved of changing diapers forever. Don’t worry, I eventually delegated the diaper changing back to my mom. I was eight years old when my youngest sister was born, and I was so excited to witness the birth. I was there every second of the birth and loved everything about it. Seeing my mom’s strength, beauty, and innate ability to birth a child lit a fire within me. I was in complete awe of the birth process from then on. My dream of becoming a nurse was planted shortly after. Fulfilling that dream didn’t come easy. I got three rejection letters before getting accepted into nursing school.
Despite the initial rejection, I knew it was where I was supposed to be and I didn’t give up. My passion for birth grew bigger throughout nursing school, and I was thirsty for any knowledge of labor & birth. The more I learned about what women were capable of, the more passionate I got about natural childbirth. Meanwhile, my husband and I couldn’t wait any longer and decided we wanted to start our family. I got pregnant, finished nursing school, and gave birth 2 months after graduation. Giving birth naturally was definitely on the radar for my first, but not something I prepared for. Then, all of a sudden, I was in labor and it hurt. Hurt bad! I wasn’t prepared. I ended up getting an epidural and having a classic medicated birth. There were some unsatisfactory side effects, and events that took place but nothing catastrophic. This experience not only taught me what I wanted for my future births but also encouraged me to further my research on natural birth. I read countless books and articles, listened to podcasts, and spoke with numerous different providers. All of this knowledge led to a fiery passion of what the woman body is innately capable of. I got pregnant with my second baby and prepared to have a natural birth. I was so excited to witness what I was BORN TO DO. On October 23, 2018, I gave birth to my sweet Luca surrounded by so much love and security. The intensity was great, and the euphoria was greater. My body labored beautifully without any intervention. Once again just intensifying my passion for the wonderful miracle of women and bringing life into the world. Being a mama is my first and greatest calling. I feel so honored that I get to hold such a valued title. One day, I aspire to support women in their birth journey however that may look!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
At times, it has been difficult. But nothing worth fighting for comes easy! After three rejection letters into nursing school, I began to wonder if it wasn’t for me. My heart knew it was, so I kept trying! My advice would be to find your passion. Find what it is that makes your heart race, and fight for it! If you don’t know what that is yet, really listen to where your mind goes when it wanders. Through my struggles, I have always relied on my faith. I trust that I will be guided in the direction that He wants to go.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
Right now, I specialize in raising tiny humans! I stay home with my kids full time. I feel called to be home with them at this time in our lives. However, I am very excited to see where my nursing career will take me in the future. My heart and soul is somewhere in the birth world working with mamas and babies.
Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
I see the comparison and/or fear to get off the way of reaching full potential in female leadership. I feel that if we let fear creep in enough it can become paralyzing. I also feel that comparison strips us of the joy and gratitude that is already so evident in our lives. In my own experience, learning to let go of fear and comparison leads to complete freedom. Freedom to be apologetically yourself. Freedom to love and be heard.
