Will Hancock shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Will, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
Realm is trailblazing our own path with a flamethrower powered by music. After the path is clear, we definitely aren’t walking down it, we’re running at full speed and having a blast while doing it. We’ve stopped trying to sound like anything in particular and that’s really been great for our creativity and output. Not trying to sound psych, heavy, or whatever has made it easier to just sound like “us”
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Realm is a quintet of musical guys who enjoy music and hanging out. We all come from different musical backgrounds that we embrace heavily. Our live shows are a continuous sonically power audio and visual experience thanks to the visual artist we work with, The LightsWitch. Once we start, we don’t stop until the lights come up.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Tom Petty ate at a Waffle House in my home town of Vestavia Hills, Alabama when I was a kid. I didn’t know who Tom Petty was at the time, but I saw how everyone was freaking out about it, and that stuck with me. He was there for maybe 30 minutes and it’s all people talked about for months.
I thought to myself, if that dude can write a song so good that people freak out over him eating breakfast, maybe I should become a musician.
Is there something you miss that no one else knows about?
The boat. We used to have a band boat that we’d take out on the weekends during the early summer. We’d cruise around, wakeboard, have some boat drinks, and enjoy the water. It was amazing.
One day we were out on the water, Lane was shredding the wake super hard as usual, and out of no where we heard a big thud and the boat started taking on water. We were so distracted by Lane’s flips that we didn’t see the giant log in the lake.
We really miss that boat.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What important truth do very few people agree with you on?
Mole men. Look them up.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
Now that the boat is gone, definitely at our studio. It’s not a physically comfortable space to be in but it can be fun, relaxing, and challenging all at the same time.
