We’re looking forward to introducing you to Priscilla Sweet. Check out our conversation below.
Priscilla, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
YES! So quick backstory – we started as a cottage bakery out of our home in our 300sq foot garage turned makeshift commercial kitchen and we decided to go retail. I don’t do it as often as I should but sometimes I find myself just sitting at my laptop – finishing up an email – or placing a supply order – and I take alook around and my team is just hustling – joking with each other, laughing, singing, just enjoying what they do- thats one thing. The next thing is at the end of the day when I see my team walk out the door – still smiling, laughing joking with each other and thinking ‘gosh I am so lucky to have such amazing people working for me’ – because regardless of what life brings them – they show up and give thier all – everyday.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Mu husband and I started our bakery in 2018 out of our home after being dissatisfied with our corporate jobs. We always joke about how and when we started becuase we started in the month of June which if you’ve ever been in Arizona – its like 100 and stupid outside and not cake friendly cake weather. But there we were – trying to figure out how to make this work. We always knew we wanted to be different. We didnt want to just sell cupcakes or everything you can buy everywhere else. Our specialty is custom cakes and wedding cakes – we knew we wanted to be a part of the event industry. When we went retail – we told ourselves ‘ok, we’re just gonna sell cake pops and the building can just be a production facility’ – well 2 display cases later and an extensive menu of desserts later – here we are. All of our cake based products are made in house. We have a small team of 6 in the bakery and then our support team outside the bakery. My mom ( Priscilla’s mom) is the head baker along with her assistand Chris. Then we have Amber squared – Amber F and Amber B. Amber F is the cake pop boss, and Amber B is my right hand in cake decorating. Melissa is our friendly face when you walk in the door and answers the phone and keeps all our orders in check. Michael and Priscilla are the owners. Michael is the Visionary and sets the tone and growth pace for the company and Priscilla is the Operations and Lead cake artist.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My husband, Michael. He was the one who recognized my skills when I was just doing it for fun and saw that it made me happy and that it could be an opportunity for something wonderful.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes. Many. Owning and running a food establishment is no joke. We also went into this with no assets so the banks were no help in getting started, but we pushed through. No matter how many hurdles you face, you can overcome – don’t let anyone tell you different. When the banks said no – we turned to the community via kickstarter which was very successful and that was very humbling.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes, lol. I am no frills, no bs at all times. I don’t dress to impress – I am simply a courteous, decent human being which is all I expect from those who want to get to know me. Tell your drama to your mama or your llama ( how that saying?) becuase I don’t want any part of it.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
Like most people, when all is right with the world. When our customers are happy, our employees are happy, our family is happy, no one is sick or feeling down, the bakery is under control, theres no drama – that’s it all FEELS right and I can be at peace.
