Paul C Hemmes shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Paul C, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
After a long break, I’ve been getting back into music. I’ve always loved singing and playing guitar, but I lost touch with it for a while. I’m not sure why exactly, but it’s come back to me easily, and I’ve been really surprised by how much I’m enjoying it.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Paul C Hemmes. I’m a filmmaker, author, and VFX artist, and I head up Fancy Lad Films. In addition to my own projects, I’ve spent years working as a contracted editor and VFX artist. I’m also an author, having just published my first book, and a musician. I’m now looking to branch out into new mediums.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
My family showed me the value of hard work. Both my parents and extended family were dedicated to their jobs, but they never let work consume their identities. We each had hidden talents that didn’t quite fit into the everyday work world, yet helped us become well-rounded individuals. I’ve always tried to follow in their footsteps. That’s why, when I make a film or write a novel, I can tap into my knowledge of history, science, and the arts. Our family has always encouraged curiosity and learning—believing that the more you learn, the more you want to explore.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I remind myself it’s okay to take risks. Despite facing many setbacks, the unexpected twists and turns in my life have shaped who I am. The risks I’ve taken and the chances I’ve taken have led to a string of real, meaningful moments of living and achieving. When I compare my journey to those around me, I realize I’ve had some incredible experiences. I’ve lived my life with confidence and had some amazing adventures. When I share my stories with others, they often say I’m “Living the life.” But since I’m so close to my experiences, I sometimes don’t see just how lucky I’ve been.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
One thing I’m incredibly proud of is staying true to myself, no matter what’s happening. I’ve always had natural leadership skills and determination, but what really sets me apart is being kind and empathetic. I’ve been taken advantage of in the past, but I won’t let that change who I am. When I decide to lend a hand, it’s just as much for my own integrity as it is for the person I’m helping. I get frustrated like anyone else, but I try to keep things in perspective with a sense of humor, which really helps. The combination of leadership and humor has drawn people to me over time, and they feel comfortable opening up because they trust I’m genuine.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What light inside you have you been dimming?
Two years ago, I underwent treatment for a brain tumor. It took nearly the entire time to recover physically and mentally, but I finally feel like I’ve come out on the other side. Experiencing such a life-changing event has made me less eager to push myself to extremes. While I remain motivated, I’m now more willing to take things at a slower pace and spend quality time with my family and friends. My constant need to push myself has eased up. As a result, I believe my work-life balance has greatly improved.
