Jacob San Luis shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Jacob , a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Lately it has been a mix of movement of pressure. The day has been starting for me early lately. 7AM is the perfect time for the day to get started. I check emails before I am fully conscious then dive straight into deals. Sometimes it’s clients that are pulling cash from their equity to clear debt and another is racing to close on a flip. Every interaction with a client is different, every problem needs a real answer. When the clock hits midday I like to reset, hit the gym, or go on a walk along the beach near my house to clear my head. After that I am back to my calls and structuring. Since I service clients in different states, I’m working across time zones. When the night hits I like to wind down, usually thinking of travel plans, enjoying wine, cigars, and quiet time. I built this schedule and life to have freedom, however I make sure to earn it every day.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hey everyone, my name is Jacob San Luis. In my previous interview with VoyagePhoenix, I was an aspiring music artist, chasing a different type of goal and a different type of life. However, I decided to venture into something more grounded, something I could build. I decided to put my sales experience out there and got myself into the mortgage industry. I am currently a loan officer with E Mortgage Capital, working across Florida, Texas, Washington, Missouri, and Arkansas with Arizona coming very soon.
Nowadays I help individuals get a huge monkey off their back which is high interest debt, helping them fund their first home, or fund their investment properties as well. What I love about E Mortgage Capital is they give me the freedom to move fast and offer more than standard local or retail lender ever could. I am able to broker hard money deals which is great for flippers who need speed and strategy.
When it comes to my interactions with clients I like to keep my approach personal and less “salesy”. I talk to them like a human being, believing what I am able to offer them is helpful for their situation, breaking the numbers down, keeping it clear, and making sure that they are a good fit for the deal. That is the foundation I built my name on, and that is what I am still building now.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
It’s hard to pick just one moment, but multiple moments that I have experienced since I started traveling more over the past 3 years. I’ve been blessed to visit extravagant locations like Dubai, Rome, Miami, Cabos but I have also experienced time in lesser fortunate countries like the Philippines. You get there and see people with very little, however they still live with pride, patience, and joy. Seeing this forced me to slow down and question what success really means. Even when you are walking the streets of Rome at night or seeing the scale of Dubai, you realize how small you are and how big the world is. Every new city I have been in has chipped away at old habits and added something new. This gives me clarity and keeps me more grounded. I like to carry this sort of awareness into the way I work, travel, and especially in how I live.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There has been plenty of times throughout my career where I almost gave up, and I believe that the feeling stays with people longer than they would like to admit. In my line of work it isn’t easy being a commission only gig: you eat what you kill. I have had dry months in the beginning where there are no fundings, you’re getting rejected on the phones, and the money is getting tight. People around you start questioning if this is the career path that you should be on, that you should get into something more stable, or you see others closing deals but you’re not. However, I am a firm believer if you stay the course, stick to your routine, and show up every day to capitalize on the small window of opportunity that presents itself you will eventually find your own success.
At this point, I have found my own routine and have now set systems in place to make sure that the fundings stay consistent and that deals are being closed. I am currently on a team that is constantly supplying leads which I work to close and this helps me from ever going back to the feeling of having zero in my bank account like I did for a few months. Trust me the feeling isn’t fun, but it did teach me a lot about myself.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
In the mortgage industry but the biggest one is that it’s all about the best or lowest rate. The truth is, the lowest rate doesn’t always mean the best deal. It’s often packed with hidden costs or structured in a way that may help the client in the long run. Another lie is that people need to be perfect candidates to qualify. Over the past few years, I have helped clients with complex situations get approved by finding the right lender and structuring the loan the right way.
People also think the mortgage process has to be confusing or stressful, which isn’t true at all. With the new technology out there and great communication skills, you can help people understand what they are standing for. This is why i like to keep it clear, real. and human. That’s how it should be.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
The biggest story I want people to remember about me is someone who was very stubborn and never gave up on what he believed in. Somebody who went a different path, but still managed to find his own success. I have always been someone who never wanted to follow the same lifestyle that most people go for which is why the career I am currently on is perfect for me. Being able to work remote, create my own schedule, and close clients in another state is a blessing that gives me the freedom to work on other endeavors that I want to pursue in the future. I can even go live in other states or other countries and still broker deals.
I would like to get back to making music again one day or perhaps begin making educational content about the mortgage process on social media also. Since I love traveling I want to start filming my experience, as I believe I have some amazing stories to share with others. The possibilities are endless, but most importantly I want to be able to keep my creative side stimulated. I believe staying creative and building helps you be more alive.
