Hayley Davies shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Hayley, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Outside of work, I’ve been really enjoying reading and listening to audiobooks. I’m especially into thrillers and murder mysteries. My favorite author right now is Freida McFadden. Her stories always keep me hooked, whether I’m unwinding after work or listening while getting things done around the house.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Hayley Davies, creator of Umber Photo Co., specializing in event, branding, and headshot photography. My approach focuses on storytelling, I aim for each gallery to tell a cohesive, compelling narrative. I take my work seriously, but I also prioritize making the experience fun. Keeping things positive helps people feel comfortable, which leads to more natural and lively photos. I truly believe that energy has a huge impact on every shoot.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a kid, I thought the only way to be successful was to go to college and follow a ‘normal’ path. I ended up going a different route, starting my own business and building Umber Photo Co. and it’s taught me that following what excites you is way more rewarding than trying to fit someone else’s idea of success.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I never actually stopped shooting, but there were definitely times I questioned whether photography could be more than a side gig. In 2020, when the world had other priorities, I had to ask myself how badly I wanted to stay in this industry. I took on a mix of photography and non-photography jobs, but I’m so glad I stuck with it because telling stories through photos is what I love, and I’m proud I fought for it.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I’m committed to creating photography that tells a story and helps people feel confident in front of the camera. With headshots, I focus on capturing personality so that my clients feel empowered. For events and branding, I aim to document authentic moments that form a meaningful narrative. It’s a project I’ll keep refining, because helping people feel seen through photography is something I truly believe in.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people remember me as someone who helped them feel seen and confident, both in front of the camera and in life. I want my work to tell stories that capture authentic moments, and for people to feel the positivity and care I brought to every project.
