Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Ebony Simelton-Payton of Gilbert

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Ebony Simelton-Payton. Check out our conversation below.

Ebony, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
Yes, I would hire myself because I bring a strong work ethic, adaptability, and proven results to the table. I’m not just reliable, but I also take initiative and look for ways to add value beyond what’s expected. If I were the hiring manager, I’d want someone on my team who is consistent, committed, and willing to grow—and that’s exactly what I bring.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, my name is Ebony, and I’m the owner of Slumber Happy, a luxury slumber party company based in Gilbert, Arizona. I create unforgettable slumber party experiences for kids and adults by transforming ordinary spaces into magical setups filled with teepees, themed décor, cozy bedding, and all the details that make a night feel truly special.

What makes Slumber Happy unique is that it’s not just about decorations—it’s about creating memories. Every setup is designed with care, love, and originality so families can relax and focus on the laughter, connection, and joy that happen during a sleepover.

My story started with a passion for creativity and hosting, and over time, I turned it into a business that brings people together. Right now, I’m working on expanding our themed slumber parties to include adult “Sip & Slumber” nights and other creative event experiences. It’s exciting to see how something as simple as a sleepover can spark so much happiness at any age.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
A moment that really shaped how I see the world was when I realized the power of creating something of my own and trusting my vision. Early on, I leaned on outside sources for inspiration, but once I started using my own creativity and original work, I saw everything change—my business grew, and people connected with it in a real way. It taught me that authenticity and confidence in your own voice matter so much, not just in business but in life. Now, I see the world as a place where you don’t have to fit into someone else’s mold—you can create your own lane and thrive in it.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self, it would be: trust yourself. Everything you’re worried about, all the detours and hard lessons, they’re shaping you into the woman you’re meant to be. Don’t doubt your worth or compare yourself to others—you’re enough, and the dreams you’re carrying will come to life in their own perfect timing.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies my industry tells itself is that a slumber party business is just about throwing some décor together. The truth is, what we do goes way beyond pillows and teepees—it’s about creating an experience, a memory that families will hold onto forever. Another lie is that bigger or more elaborate always equals better. I’ve learned it’s not about the quantity of decorations, it’s about the intentionality and the feeling you create. When the details are thoughtful and personal, that’s what makes the night magical.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope the story people tell about me is that I lived with love, purpose, and intention. That I poured into others, made them feel seen, and left them with memories that mattered. I want people to say I created joy—whether through my family, my friendships, or even the little sleepover setups that turned into lifelong memories. More than anything, I hope they remember that I was genuine, I gave my all, and I left people better than I found them.
