We recently had the chance to connect with Chanel and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Chanel , thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
The thing I’m most proud of building that nobody sees is my children my children are my greatest accomplishment I was a teen mom I had my first child at 16 and had 5 kids by 23 married to a abusive narcissist at 18 over the years I learned so much about life through trails and tribulations i learned at a young age about hard work and dedication wins and losses lots of nights crying and praying to god to make a way for me and my children I learned how to love with all my heart it’s wasn’t easy then but now my children are teenagers and I’m still fruitful I get to teach my children hard work and dedication I get to show them what unconditional love truly feels like I get to teach my children how to be grateful and always have faith that god will make a way. Nobody sees this side of my life I’m a very
Private person. But behind the scenes I’m full of life and love and i truly believe that me telling my story will inspire teen moms DV victims anybody struggling with mental health people in general I’m living testimony that god always makes a way. Stay strong and have faith
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Chanel also know as Mommie cakes I’m a 35yr old mom of 5 kids I have a small dessert/ bakery here in Az i tell my story through my cakes. This is my passion and I hope to inspire people around the world. I started my business back in 2017 with a 2 day bake sell in memory of my grandmother she taught me all her special recipes and I wanted to share with the world I made $500 in 2 days off that bake sell and never turn back. I built my business from ground up with hard work and dedication showing my children that anything is possible just stay strong and have faith that anything you go through is meant to happen to make you stronger you just need to have faith and believe that god will always make a way. I want people to know this is a family business it’s not just me working my kids are too. My Business has turn world famous I cater to big corporations like amazon, girl Scouts, asu and Pepsi just to name a few you can also find me on all delivery platforms like DoorDash Uber eats and post-mates. I’m currently looking for investors to expand my business the goal is to have multiple Mommie cakes dessert shops around the world made with love.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child i didn’t believe in myself at all i grow up with a learning disability and couldn’t read on top of that i had a speech impediment as well through out my life kids made fun of me made me feel less then I had no confidence and no friends very lonely and depressed my child hood I struggled with mental health . Now as an adult nobody can tell me nothing I’m very humble but i literally know I’m that girl and I’m grateful for my past it made me who I am today!
When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
I stop hiding my pain when i left my ex husband I was in a abusive relationship from 18- 29yrs old in 2020 when I move to Az is when my life changed I stop hiding my pain and using to inspire the world I tell my story through my cakes showing people that there is beauty at the end not only do I use my power to create beautiful cakes and the best tasting desserts that you will ever have in your life. I also use my power through my voice I love to inspire people I love to tell my story not for people to feel bad for me but for but for people to have hope that all things are possible. there was a point where I never thought I would make it out of that but I did. the things i prayed for 5 years ago are happening now and the things i prayed for 10 yrs ago has happened. I’m just very grateful that I’m able to break generational curses with my children. They will not have to go through or experience the things that happened to me throughout there life it’s stops with me.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes! This is the real me I’m just a girl that turn into a women a mom of 5 kids striving to be the best version of myself that I can be. Working hard everyday day to make a way for me and my children. Loving with all my heart. helping inspiring and building my brand. Thanking and praying to god everyday that I have another chance. My very humble and grateful
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
If I was to retire tomorrow my customer would definitely miss my signature desserts and my signature cakes made with love. I still have people calling me from when I started in 2017 in LA asking when I’m coming back or can I do a pop up shop out there.
