Kevin Kopkowski of Downtown on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Kevin Kopkowski. Check out our conversation below.

Kevin, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
When we host an event it might seem like its a huge party day of the event but the lead up up from the uncertainty to the promoting, finding a venue , booking djs , visuals , vendors , security , door people so much time effort go into these things. that to the naked eye it seems easy until you try going on for yourself. probably one of the biggest pains in the butt is having to deal with artist agents and management some of these people are just to are just very difficult to deal with and just adds added stress or redoing times consuming tasks because they didn’t like something or there artist should be higher up on the flyer than this person. just because me throw parties and events doesn’t mean the whole process is a party actually far from it =

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Kevin Kopkowski an underground DJ/Renegade Event Producer / Promoter
Affiliations: Desert Decibels, FX3 Productions , Wook House Collective
4 years of experience with 200+ shows either preforming or production
Resident dj for The Kava Bar (Tucson,AZ)

What makes our bass crew Desert Decibels interesting, special or unique I think what makes us special or unique is all for of us love Bass music but also have there own preference and style. to the untrained ear it might sound the same but were different. I also think what makes our events unique is the overall vibe. (knocks on Wood) We have never had to have any sort of security at our events which to me is amazing all knowing what goes on the amaze people that are drawn to brand are generally awesome decent people and come into realm with a positive and fun mindset and I don’t really notice that anywhere else in town. All are welcome and accepted. Feeling safe is something we take to heart. providing an atmosphere for people to feel free enough to be whomever or whatever they feel like without judgement

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Probably living in a group home briefly when I was 15 I realized that you’ve got to look after yourself because no one else is going to help you especially in that type of situation. Realizing that there are evil and mean people out there put up so many walls that are still up and affecting me to this day. Ive gotta warm up to most people and don’t just let anyone in. I find it very difficult to date anyone I haven’t been friends with for a while. I like everyone but trust very few because I’ve seen the absolute worst in people.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear of me doing my best and my best not being good enough. Which ultimatly made me fear someone being upset with me causing me to over compensate and overthink everything. So people pleasing has held me back because I put myself on the back burner for a very long time and putting others above myself. Which can be short term solution but long term that philosophy creates nothing but resentment.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
I would say yes I’ve never really been that person who can change personalities or core beliefs depending on the people I’m around. Love it or hate hate it I’m going to be me. I know exactly who I am and I won’t compromise who I am as a person to go get ahead etc.. I’ve seen people change in an instant if they know there going to get what they want and that’s just not part of me.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What will you regret not doing?
When I look back I don’t know if I’ll regret not starting my musical journey sooner. I wish I would have had the confidence in myself about starting something from nothing instead of having the fear of failure hinder my abilities.
