We’re looking forward to introducing you to Jasmine Singh . Check out our conversation below.
Hi Jasmine , thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Spending quality time with friends in person. There is a joy that appears when you are in community with people who understand you and are enthusiastic to enjoy life at your side. We have attended several events in Phoenix, went to fitness classes and even had relaxing days at the pool. As someone who once defined themselves by their job title it feels great to have hobbies and live a life outside the laptop.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Jasmine Singh and I created a blog called 99Finds. As a corporate girl for the last 10 years I have been pushed, pulled and worked myself to exhaustion. After year 4 in corporate, I started making small changes to my life with the goal of saving time, and making things easier.
Many people struggle with the pull of corporate. Responding to emails at any time, checking Teams just in case something came up and never truly clocking out. The last straw was wondering what my true interests were because I spent the last couple of months eating, sleeping and breathing work to get a new release out.
While I still work in a corporate job, my life and priorities have significantly changed. 99Finds brings my perspective of building a fulfilling life outside of a corporate job.
99Finds is a collection of everything that brings Balance, Ease, and Efficiency to my life. The blog is separated into the following sections:
• Life Hacks: Simple changes and setting goals.
• Fitness Finds:A healthy mind leads to a healthy life.
• Travel Finds: I travel often for work, so lets make it efficient.
• Pup Finds: All things related to being a dog mom! I adore my Black Lab, and having a reactive dog was a twist I never expected.
• Phoenix Finds: Fun things to do in and around Phoenix!
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My Aunt Debbie is someone who always encouraged my creativity. She spent time at the library helping me carefully choose which books to check out, listened to my original stories that I wrote and took the time to water my creative spark. Looking back, I appreciate her patience with answering all my questions about life and the time we spent exploring art museums around New York City. Those are some of my most cherished memories growing up.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Never stop creating. As I aged, I let go of the ability to create and focused on hobbies that were better suited towards life as an adult. My younger self loved writing stories and creating illustrations. As an adult my life is full of color, I get to travel and experience new places and continue writing via my own platform. Writing and creating stories is something that I always enjoyed but in my younger brain it didn’t seem like a “real job”. Continuing to write regularly and create content for 99Finds has allowed me to return to the joy I felt writing stories on my 90’s desktop computer.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I am committed to improving the lives of corporate employees. As someone who fell a little too deep into the corporate world, I want everyone to understand that you can balance both personal life and work. There is an assumption that corporate work is a bad place and that is not 100% true, especially when everyone can’t easily leave the industry. There is a way to balance work and your life. You can have ease, the security of a job and health insurance. It does require some mindset shifts to look at life differently but contrary to what the internet may say quitting is not always the answer.
99Finds answers the questions – Who am I when the laptop closes? How do I add value to my life outside of work?
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
That building 99Finds was easy. Everyone loves to celebrate the finished product but there is much sweat, tears and important decisions that go into building a brand. Especially one that is a personal reflection of your life. 99Finds is the version of myself that I rarely shared when I started curating my adult life. It was challenging to share personal aspects of myself with the internet on a regular basis and to bring a positive lesson to my experiences. There is a variety of content supporting the idea that corporate jobs are breaking us down piece by piece, but in the same breath there is an action that we can take to pour into our lives so we are not broken. Taking the time to focus on Balance, Ease and Efficiency in my daily life as changed how I use my time and most importantly how I value every day in this life. 99Finds allowed me to document how I navigate this space and while it is colorful and exciting, coming to this point has been a tough journey. If there is one thing someone learns from my legacy I hope they realize you don’t have to figure it out today but with small changes you will eventually meet the best version of yourself and NO you don’t have to completely uproot yourself to do it.
