Inspiring Conversations with Yuri Isakov of Better Barber

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yuri Isakov.

Hi Yuri, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started barbering when I was 15, helping my parents run their barbershop. At first, I was just cleaning up and observing, but I quickly became fascinated by the craft. I started cutting hair for friends and family, learning through hands on experience and constant practice. By 18, I knew this was more than just a skill, it was my passion. Over the years, I’ve worked in a variety of shops, building my technique, customer service, and understanding of the business. Now at 31, I run my own barbershop, but I’m always looking for new opportunities to grow, stay sharp, and contribute to a strong team.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been a journey full of growth and lessons to get to where I am today. I began barbering at 15, originally just helping out in my parents’ barbershop. After four years of working alongside them and learning the craft, I decided to step away from barbering to pursue a college degree. I attended Arizona State University for two years before realizing that college wasn’t the right path for me.

I returned to barbering with a renewed perspective and, at 21, opened my first barbershop. While it was an incredible learning experience, the responsibilities of running a business at such a young age became overwhelming, and I made the tough decision to step away from ownership.

Shortly after, I joined a well established shop where I was able to focus on my craft, build a loyal clientele, and gain valuable experience over the next several years. After a decade of growth, both personally and professionally, I felt ready to take on ownership again. This time, with more preparation, maturity, and drive.

Barbering has always been a core part of who I am. Every step in my journey has shaped me into the barber and business owner I am today.

What makes you happy?
What makes me happy is seeing someone walk out of my chair with a fresh cut and a boost of confidence. There’s something powerful about helping people feel good about themselves—it’s more than just a haircut, it’s an experience. I love the conversations, the connections, and the trust that’s built over time with each client.

I’m also happy when I see growth, both in myself and in others. Whether it’s mentoring a young barber, improving a skill, or watching my shop become a place people genuinely enjoy coming to, that sense of progress and purpose keeps me motivated.
