Today we’d like to introduce you to Will Newman.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started in the financial services industry in 2009 at The Vanguard Group in Scottsdale, AZ. I fielded 120 calls a day from Vanguard clients during the Great Recession of 2009, so nonetheless, I was forced to learn this industry very quickly! The lightbulb went on for me when I would speak with advisors who asked what the payout to the advisor would be for investing in Vanguard portfolios.
This was when I first realized that maybe a lot of these advisors aren’t in the industry for the right reasons. I knew that one day I wanted to help people navigate the world of investing, and could do that by starting my own financial advisory practice and setting it up in the most low-cost and transparent way possible.
About four years later, I launched Newman’s Financial Planning, which is a 100% independent RIA (Registered Investment Advisory) firm that truly can say we put the client’s interests first in everything we do.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Just like with any new business, my path has not always been a smooth road. There will always be struggles no matter what industry you start a business in. I started my business from scratch with a newborn, knowing that in this industry, 90% of new advisors close their doors after five years, but the ones that do make it past that end up staying in it for life.
Looking back, I remember how many lessons I learned from the first few meetings and rejections I faced. Now I can say I attribute much of my success to the growth I experienced early on.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Newman’s Financial Planning is a 100% independent Registered Investment Advisory firm, meaning we provide…. Being a true Fiduciary to all my clients means every decision I make is for the benefit of my clients and putting their interests first. Approximately 90% of all advisory firms are compensated by recommending certain products or services that may or may not be in the client’s best interests.
NFP is one of the only Financial Advisory firms that lists our fees right on the website. Again, full transparency is at the heart of everything we do. I specialize in helping families and individuals plan for their future. This could look like a full and comprehensive retirement plan all the way down to someone just looking for help creating a budget or choosing 401k investment options and everywhere in between.
I always say that this is one of the few things in life you do not get what you pay for. Ultimately, the lower you are paying in advisory and investment fees the more you are keeping of your hard-earned returns. I am most proud of the reputation and character that NFP has developed, which is a result of honest, educational, and effective investment planning. Most of my new clients come from client referrals, which, to me, is the ultimate thank you.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I attribute much of my success to resiliency and never giving up. I could have taken a secure, easy career path but the best decision of my life was also my biggest risk in starting my own firm. I would also say that in my industry, the integrity and honesty with which I operate allow me to help others and ensure my clients are set up for financial success.
