Today we’d like to introduce you to Sujay Kolpuru.
Hi Sujay, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
As a junior last year, I stepped into the college counselor’s room one day, where the familiar aura of guidance was overshadowed by my counselors’ weary eyes amidst the overwhelm of spreadsheets and looming deadlines. It was in this moment that I experienced a moment of clarity that went beyond anxious teenagers.
Juxtaposed with my recent project of a scholarship app, there was a clear need for a comprehensive tool to simplify the college application journey for both students and counselors.
As I approached my own pre-college applications, I could empathize with the perpetual stress that seemed to suffocate the seniors. In response, I swiftly developed an MVP of a software platform, eager to alleviate the difficulties of the people closest to me. After organizing a class demonstration for the seniors, I saw that the challenges were systemic, and my software could offer more than a personal fix—it could bring transformative change to the entire application process.
From this experience, I had evolved from my role as a student leader to an entrepreneur, driven by a profound desire to enact meaningful change in my school community and beyond. It has taught me that leadership is about more than just taking charge; it’s about creating connections, understanding systemic issues, and striving for solutions that benefit the wider community.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
At my school, I’ve fostered a legacy that is adaptable to change, especially as the Ambassadors Club President, striving for awareness and active participation in school affairs. My venture, Applimize, serves as a testament to this commitment.
Implementing Applimize was challenging, pushing against the ingrained habits of veteran college counselors. My efforts, however, have left a wave of introspection, encouraging a shift from traditional methods to more innovative solutions. This subtle yet impactful change is an important part of my contribution to altering these systemic issues.
My impact extends beyond school walls through my technical contributions to nonprofits via Catchafire. A notable project was developing a software for Toni’s Kitchen, enhancing their food tracking system, which in turn improved their financial stability and operational efficiency. This work not only aids the immediate community but also contributes to a broader movement aiming to redefine barriers in education and resource access.
My journey has not only been about creating practical solutions but also about inspiring action and fostering a sense of responsibility, even as a high school student. I’ve witnessed a shift in attitudes, as peers and educators alike are now more open to challenging the status quo, paving the way for a more equitable future in education and beyond.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about Applimize?
Navigating the college application process is universally daunting, creating stress for students, parents, and counselors alike. The intensity of this process is magnified at my high school, where the pursuit of prestigious universities is a common goal, driving students to apply to an overwhelming number of colleges. This trend, coupled with historically low acceptance rates, creates a perfect storm of pressure and anxiety.
This issue hits close to home. Every year, I would witness the strain on my senior friends, which was only compounded by the pandemic and when our counselors were not so great. So, I created Applimize, a software to streamline and clarify the application process for all involved.
In Arizona, the counselor-to-student ratio is alarmingly high, particularly in low-income schools, underscoring the need for accessible tools like Applimize. Erin Goodnow, a counselor and one of my first clients, encapsulates the daily juggling act of managing client needs, personal responsibilities, and the inherent guilt that comes with the territory. Her story is a microcosm of a larger issue, and it’s counselors like her that Applimize aims to support, providing a much-needed moment to breath in their hectic days.
Applimize is more than a tool; it’s a community partner striving to make college admissions less stressful and more equitable.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
As I think back, one moment stands out vividly: my 7th-grade school field trip to San Diego. This trip was not just a break from the academic routine; it symbolized the culmination of my middle school journey and played a pivotal role in cementing lifelong friendships.
The excitement was palpable as we boarded the bus, buzzing with anticipation. This trip was more than a vacation; it was marked our transition from the cocoon of middle school to the unknown realms of high school.
Yet, amidst the sightseeing and fun, something profound was happening. Friendships were deepening, forged in shared experiences and laughter. As we explored San Diego together, our bonds strengthened, anchoring us to each other with ties that would endure the challenges of high school and beyond.
In those moments, I learned valuable lessons about camaraderie, trust, and the joy of shared experiences. These friends became my support system and an integral part of my identity. The trip to San Diego was a celebration of our collective journey through middle school, a time of growth, discovery, and the forging of lasting relationships.
