Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Tilton.
Hi Stephanie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My business became a “thing” back in 2016 because I needed a way out of the corporate world. A world that always made me feel guilty for taking time off work. Staying home with sick kids. Bad. Taking a vacation. Bad. Taking care of my physical health. Bad. If I wasn’t at my desk 24-7, I was made to feel like the worst employee ever. The real kicker came when I was home on bed rest after a preterm labor scare. I got a letter saying that I was no longer an employee at the government agency I was with — my supervisor and coworkers were totally unaware of the termination. (I was due to give birth two months later.) Yep, that happened! And it was at that moment I decided the corporate world wasn’t for me. Not if my value wasn’t appreciated and I could be let go of for any reason or none whatsoever. I’ve always loved writing, so my fingers got to work turning words into a career I could work from home. What started as blog writing on UpWork for mere dollars has now turned into working on major launch projects with entrepreneurs and creative spirits worldwide. Some of my favorite projects to date include working on launching a creative watercolor retreat, helping a published author with his book launch, and hosting copy audits for some of my long-term clients.
Please talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The path of an entrepreneur is about as bumpy as you can imagine. Some months I’m entirely booked with client projects (sometimes more than I can handle). In other months there are no bookings whatsoever. Expenses are still coming out even though money still needs to come in. The mental stress can make any person wonder if being an entrepreneur is worth all the ups and downs. But then I get a message from a client talking about how much my work has helped their business, and I remember how the ups and downs truly are worth it. To be an entrepreneur, you must learn to push through even when times get tough.
We’ve been impressed with Stephanie Tilton Copywriting, but for folks who might need to be more familiar, what can you share about what you do and what sets you apart?
I’m a copywriter and launch strategist for business owners who want to help others through digital courses, memberships, and coaching programs. I help my clients launch these offers by offering launch strategy alongside copywriting services. Some of my specialties include sales pages, email campaigns, and social media captions. My work includes audience research, so I know who I’m writing to and what I need to say in the copy to make it more compelling—one thing my work needs to include – icky marketing tactics. Instead, I use a more heartfelt approach to writing sales copy. I want my words to reflect how much my clients care about the person on the other side of their promotions. And the great thing about writing copy like that is that it deepens the community’s feelings about their courses, memberships, and programs.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Social media is a great tool when you use it the right way. One app that helps me show up as my best self is Instagram. I’ve developed great friendships with people through messages. We chat often, and it makes me feel like the things I share are consumed by people who care about me. I’m constantly learning new things from others, and the app has helped me gain new perspectives and hear voices that I may not be around in my normal life. The app can also be overwhelming and stressful at times, and it’s then that I’m reminded to take a break and spend more time with my family and friends.
