Hi Preston , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m Preston Long, a former police detective turned professional home inspector, actor, and voice talent. My path has been anything but ordinary, and that’s exactly what fuels my work today.
With nearly 2,000 inspections completed across Arizona, I bring a sharp investigative mindset to every property I assess. My background in law enforcement honed my attention to detail, my ability to stay calm under pressure, and my commitment to telling the truth clearly—qualities that now serve buyers, sellers, and real estate professionals every day through Desert Shield Property Inspections.
After years of working with a respected company in the Valley, I launched Desert Shield to provide the same level of thorough, unbiased inspections—now powered by my own values of service, responsiveness, and integrity. Whether it’s a new build, a family home, or a rental property, I help clients understand what matters most with honest assessments and clear explanations—never alarmist, always solution-focused.
Outside of inspections, I’m also a working actor and voice talent. My creative work helps sharpen my communication skills, storytelling instincts, and ability to connect with a wide range of people—on camera, behind a mic, or during a home inspection walkthrough.
Desert Shield now serves the Greater Phoenix area with a full range of residential and commercial inspection services, from termite and sewer scope to pool, spa, and IAQ evaluations. I’m proud to be building a business that protects people, strengthens communities, and reflects the diverse skills I’ve built along the way.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not a smooth road… some of the challenges have been re-connecting with some realtors that I have worked with in the past and connecting and building relationships with new buyers and clients.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The home inspection industry is evolving—and fast. Over the next 5 to 10 years, I expect to see several key shifts that will reshape how inspections are delivered, perceived, and integrated into the real estate process.

Technology will play a major role, with increased use of tools like thermal imaging, moisture mapping, sewer scope cameras, and air quality diagnostics becoming standard rather than add-ons. At the same time, clients are demanding more clarity and less fear-based reporting, which means inspectors must be better communicators—not just defect finders.

There’s also a growing need for inspection firms that real estate professionals can trust—not just to be thorough, but to be professional, calm, and responsive. As more agents and buyers seek inspectors who can educate without alarming, the companies that master that balance will stand out.

At Desert Shield Property Inspections, we’re leaning into that future. My goal is to grow our brand into a multi-inspector firm with a strong presence across the Greater Phoenix area and beyond—recognized for professionalism, reliability, and clear, client-focused reporting.
