Today we’d like to introduce you to Peter Dufour IV, DC, FIAMA.
Hi Peter, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Thanks so much for having me; I really appreciate the opportunity to share my story.
Years ago, I was working for Continental Airlines at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport as a ticket and gate agent when I injured my shoulder on the job. Like most people, I was sent to the company doctor and ended up going there four times, once a week. Each visit, they gave me a different pain pill, muscle relaxer or anti-inflammatory, but no real answers or solutions.
On my fourth visit, the medical doctor actually said, “Oaky, I see we’ve given you this, this, and this. What would you like us to give you now?” That really hit me because I was done with guessing or just masking the pain. I couldn’t function on the pain pills and muscle relaxers, I wanted my life back. So I told him, “That’s it. I’m done! I’m going to a chiropractor, and work comp is going to pay for it.”
Within two weeks, I started feeling a huge improvement. By week three, I felt better than before the injury, not just in my shoulder, but all over. That’s what changed everything for me. I was amazed by the results of this natural, different approach to healing. I had no idea how powerful chiropractic care could be, because like most people, I was basically raised in a medicine cabinet. The old mindset was, if you’re hurt or sick, just take a pill.
That experience led me to make a life-changing decision: I was going to become a chiropractor. From there, I went back to school, dove into all the classes, essentially restarted my education, and never looked back.
Talk about a challenge! I went back to school, moved across the country without knowing anyone, balanced life, and eventually returned to Arizona to begin practicing. It all took tremendous perseverance and drive.
Because of that injury and my decision to attend chiropractic school, I became a true believer in the body’s ability to heal and regenerate, hell, I’ve lived it myself. Today, I have the privilege of helping people find relief, reclaim their lives, and get back to doing what they love.
What started as a painful injury set the stage for a career I never imagined, and one I’ve become truly passionate about.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s definitely not been a smooth road, but I wouldn’t trade the journey because each challenge taught me something and shaped the way I practice today.
After deciding to become a chiropractor, I moved across the country to attend Life Chiropractic College in Marietta, Georgia. It was a big step, I didn’t know anyone, and going back to school after a few years in the workforce wasn’t easy, but I was young, driven and focused.
The real struggles began after graduation, trying to establish myself in the profession. My first associate position paid just $1,500 for three months of nearly 24/7 work. Later, I worked for a company that pressured me to “over” X-ray patients just to over bill insurance. Even in my first year as a doctor, I knew that wasn’t right or ethical. I refused to compromise my values and chose to move on.
Next, I worked out of another chiropractor’s office and put in a lot of effort to help grow their practice, which had declined after they purchased it. I genuinely wanted to see him succeed. But when it came time for me to grow my practice, I was told, “I just don’t want to see you grow in my office.” That’s a statement I’ll never forget, especially since I thought he was a friend. Walking away from that, I felt totally shocked and really disappointed.
After that, I opened a practice for someone else in another state. Then, I returned to Arizona, saved up $20,000, and decided it was time to bet on myself. I drove all around the East Valley looking for a space, and found a nearby chiropractor who was only open Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I offered to pay half his rent if I could start my practice on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. After he made a few calls to mutual acquaintances, he agreed. That was my first real chance to build my own practice. A year later, I moved into my own space.
But some of my greatest setbacks came later, in the form of serious injuries. I suffered a severe shoulder in 2005 and a devastating elbow injury in Dec of 2020; both required extremely difficult surgeries and each time I was told I would never practice again. Later, I faced lower back spinal cord compression (90%) that required surgery, followed six weeks later by the discovery of a spinal cord tumor compressing 95% to 98% of my spinal cord. I was told I was just 4 to 6 weeks away from being paralyzed from the mid-chest down. Each of these injuries forced me to close my office, undergo extensive surgeries, focus on healing and rehabbing the injured areas, and then rebuild everything from the ground up. Each time, it was harder than the last.
Still, I kept going. Those physical setbacks gave me a deeper understanding of pain, frustration, and perseverance. As difficult as each recovery was, they helped shape me into a better doctor and a more compassionate person. I know what it feels like to lose function, to hurt every day, and to fight like hell to get your life back. That’s what drives me to help others do the same.
It’s also led to being voted “Best of Gilbert” for Best Chiropractor, Best Alternative Pain Management, and/or Best Kept Secret every year since 2015.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I’m the owner of The Dufour Accident Chiropractic & Acupuncture Center in Gilbert, Arizona. We focus on helping people recover from auto accidents, workers’ compensation injuries, manage pain, and restore function, naturally and effectively.
My approach is patient-centered and results-driven. Everyone who walks through our doors receives individualized care. I don’t believe in a “one-size-fits-all” treatment plan. Whether someone’s recovering from a car accident, living with chronic pain, or just trying to improve their quality of life, I tailor their care using a mix of chiropractic, acupuncture, soft tissue therapy, stretching and strengthening exercises, and other supportive modalities.
What we’re known for is our ability to combine these therapies into comprehensive, personalized care plans. It’s an integrative approach that helps patients heal and thrive, not just get by.
What sets my practice apart is the level of care and personal connection I offer. I’ve been through serious injuries myself, and I share those experiences openly. I know what it’s like to be in pain, to lose function, to face the fear that your career, or your life as you know it, might be over. That perspective gives me empathy and a deeper connection to my patients. I take the time to really listen, offer honest guidance, and do everything I can to help.
We’ve also earned trust and strong relationships with local healthcare professionals, MDs, orthopedists, and pain management specialists. They refer patients to us when a conservative, non-pharmaceutical approach is appropriate, and I refer out when needed. That kind of collaboration allows us to deliver complete, ethical care.
Getting to this point wasn’t easy. I started part-time, sharing office space, and built everything from the ground up. Today, I’m proud to have been voted “Best of Gilbert” for Best Chiropractor, Best Alternative Pain Management, and/or Best Kept Secret every year since 2015. But when new patients bring up the awards, I’m quick to tell them it’s not because I think I’m “the best”, it’s because every person I treat knows one thing: I’ll do everything in my power to help them, no matter what it takes.
At the end of the day, my mission is simple: to help people in pain get back to doing what they love, without unnecessary drugs or surgery whenever possible. That’s what keeps me inspired and committed every single day.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I believe luck has played a role in my journey, both good and bad. But what matters more than luck itself is how I interpreted it and what I did with it. Yes, I’ve definitely had my share of bad luck in the form of serious injuries, failed partnerships, and unethical employers. Each of those could have ended my practice and my career. But I chose to see each one as a learning experience, an opportunity to improve and make productive changes. The so-called bad luck forced me to look in the mirror, work smarter, and stay focused on why I became a chiropractor in the first place.
On the other hand, I’ve had moments of good luck too, like finding a chiropractor’s office that happened to be closed three days a week and asking if I could rent it on the other days. That opportunity gave me my first real chance to build something of my own. But even then, it wasn’t luck alone. I was out there driving through the East Valley, looking for something. I may not have known exactly what I was looking for, but I was still out there searching. Luck showed up, but I had to be ready and chose to meet it halfway.
So yes, luck has shown up in my story, but I’ve never relied on it. I’ve learned that success comes from showing up, doing the work the best I can, and treating people the way I want to be treated, no matter what life throws at you.
