Inspiring Conversations with Pakkawalan Pookim of Bangkok Grill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pakkawalan Pookim.

Hi pakkawalan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Fifteen years ago, the owner of Bangkok Grill was living in Thailand, working as a sales engineer—far from the kitchen, but never far from her passion for cooking. She grew up surrounded by the aromas of Thai street food and the warmth of family meals made with love. That passion eventually led her across the world to Tempe, Arizona, where she brought her dream to life.

Today, Bangkok Grill proudly stands as Arizona’s first Thai Halal restaurant, offering not just authentic Thai cuisine, but also a story of determination, culture, and heart.

Whether you’re planning a special event or just craving something bold and comforting, let us cater with dishes that celebrate the rich flavors of Thailand. We offer options for every lifestyle—from vegan to gluten-free to keto—so everyone at your table feels welcome.

👩‍🍳 A women-owned, family-run business dedicated to sharing real Thai food made from real passion.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the biggest turning points was during COVID-19. Like many small businesses, we were faced with uncertainty, reduced foot traffic, and the need to quickly adapt. It forced us to rethink how we connect with our customers. That’s when we shifted our focus to online orders, delivery, and takeout, making our food more accessible and convenient. It was a tough period, but it taught us how to be more flexible, creative, and resilient.

The pandemic pushed us to grow—not just as a restaurant, but as a team and a family. We learned how to better listen to our community’s needs, especially when it came to dietary preferences and halal options, and we embraced the opportunity to serve a wider audience with love and authenticity.

Every struggle along the way—from navigating a new country to building a loyal customer base—has been part of the journey. And we’re so grateful for everyone who has supported us through it all.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
For me, the biggest lessons didn’t always come from formal mentors. They came from other small business owners, loyal customers, and community members who shared their experiences and supported me when I needed it most. Talking to people who have faced similar challenges—especially other women and immigrant entrepreneurs—has been incredibly valuable.

My advice:

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. People are usually more willing to share advice than you think.

Show up in your community. Whether it’s local events, markets, or online groups—your presence matters.

Be genuine. The best connections happen when you’re not just trying to gain something, but really trying to learn or support others.

And most importantly—keep learning. Every conversation, every mistake, and every success is part of your growth. That mindset has helped me stay motivated and connected along the way.
