Inspiring Conversations with Michelle Silva of The Therapy Grove

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Silva.

Michelle Silva

Hi Michelle, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hello there! My name is Michelle Silva, and I’m excited to share my story with you. Growing up as the youngest of four girls in El Paso, Texas, I’ve always been proud of my Mexican-American heritage. But what truly sets me apart is being a first-generation college student.

I won’t sugarcoat it – the journey hasn’t been easy. Coming from a blue-collar working class family, I watched my father work as a self-employed custodian, while my mother devoted herself to being a stay-at-home mom until she entered the food service industry when I was 14 years old.

However, despite the challenges, I’ve remained determined. My parents constantly encouraged my siblings and I to pursue higher education, and that’s exactly what we all did.

During my undergraduate years studying Psychology in Washington DC, I faced the challenge of balancing school with the high cost of living. To make ends meet, I worked multiple jobs, including as a test proctor at the university’s disability support center. When I learned that the center did not offer attendant care, I took matters into my own hands and began providing the service privately. This was my first taste of entrepreneurship, although I didn’t realize it then. Working with one individual, in particular, opened my eyes to how the environment can empower individuals to become more independent. I quickly became passionate about modifying living spaces to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. This person encouraged me to consider a career as an occupational therapist, a profession I had never even heard of before. A few years later, I received my master’s degree in occupational therapy.

After moving to Phoenix, I started my career in home health and eventually became an entrepreneur by starting my practice. Although running my own business terrified me, I knew I had to leap regardless. Looking back on my decision in 2016, it was one of the best choices of my life. Running my own business has been such a steep learning curve and I am eternally grateful for all the support I have received from my parents, children, and close friends.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I definitely would not describe my journey as being smooth. In 2006, I became a single parent to two young boys. Jalen, my oldest son, was only 1 month shy of turning two and Joshua was only 9 months old. It was a jolting experience, to be honest. Thankfully, my children bring me endless joy and satisfaction. But at the time, it was a struggle to reclaim my footing. My mom, knowing I had always planned to pursue a master’s degree, suggested I go back to school. However, being a single parent, I hesitated to put myself through that challenge. Eventually, I boldly decided to move back in with my parents, who supported my children and me while I pursued my master’s degree in occupational therapy. This experience was one of the most trying things I’ve ever done. There were so many moments when I thought about giving up. However, I could not let my children see me quit, so I persevered. Three years later, I stood on that graduation stage, overcome with pride and gratitude. In the entrepreneurial world, the importance of knowing one’s ‘why’ is very important– for me, that ‘why’ has always been my children. I want them to see me as an example of hard work, determination, and persistence. I hope I have succeeded in showing them that.

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
At The Therapy Grove, we’re on a mission to make a difference in the lives of children with disabilities. Our team of passionate therapists provides in-home pediatric speech, physical, feeding, and occupational therapy services throughout Arizona. Plus, thanks to our contract with the Division of Developmental Disabilities, these services are free for eligible children. Our goal is to help these kids reach their full potential and experience the joys of childhood. We understand that every child is unique and deserves individualized care, so we provide innovative solutions tailored to their needs. Our compassionate therapists work to improve learning, development, behavior, and overall well-being through quality therapy services. At The Therapy Grove, we’re more than just a company – a supportive community. We believe in creating a safe space where every child can express themselves freely and receive the support they need to thrive. Our vision is for families affected by disabilities to have the resources and knowledge they need to offer their loved ones the best support possible.

What changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
It’s sobering to learn that 1 in 36 children will receive an Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis. It’s even more disheartening to learn that there’s a shortage of clinicians to provide the necessary services. As a solution, I’m doing my part by hiring exceptional therapists and ensuring they feel valued and supported. I aim to help them excel in their therapy skills and deliver the best services possible to those in need. My dreams include opening a clinic in a medically underserved area and building up community partnerships.
