Inspiring Conversations with Melissa Komen of Li’l Miner Diner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Komen.

Hi Melissa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My husband, son and myself had a passion for the mid-century/atomic age. We also have a passion for food. In 2020 we opened Miners on Main in Superior, AZ. We were open until my husband, our chef, passed away at the end of 2023. My son and I still had the passion to continue what we started. We moved our DINER to where we have lived since 2004, Gold Canyon, AZ. It is an unincorporated area of Pinal county that sits at the base of the beautiful Superstition Mountains. We reopened as Li’l Miner Diner on 9/26/2024. We make fresh, family recipes in an atmosphere of the 1950’s. From the decor, to the design of the logo, to the creation of the home recipe inspired menu, everything is a family endeavor.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Opening a restaurant is never a smooth road. First you encounter issues with the space. There is always something the landlord didn’t tell you about. We went over budget due to issues with the space we rented. This also set back our opening by almost a month. This prevented us from getting a sign on the building and took from our advertising budget. We have did a local mailer with very little success after the first issue. We stay positive because of the regulars that we have gotten over the last 16 months. But we see many days with only a few customers.

We’ve been impressed with Li’l Miner Diner, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a small diner that has 36 seats inside and 11 outside. We serve breakfast and lunch 6 days a week. My son is the chef, and I am the Sous chef. We have an open kitchen with a small counter and customers can see their meals prepared. Our most popular breakfast items are the Miners Bowl and our French toast. At lunch we make our soups from scratch, hand patty each burger and cut skin on potatoes for our fries. We also offer, salads, sandwiches and dessert. Including shakes! We are most proud of the fact that we are a sit down diner where a server treats you like family and the food is fresh. We want everyone to have an experience when they come in.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
The memories that inspired the business are from my first waitress job at Lucky’s diner in Schaumburg, Illinois. Son says he remembers sit down dinners every night as a family.
