Hi Melissa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey in PR started with my love of writing – I was winning awards for it by age 8, which eventually led to a journalism scholarship at Kent State. While there, a professor noticed my natural PR abilities and encouraged me to switch paths. That turned out to be life-changing advice.

After landing a prestigious internship in Chicago and fielding multiple job offers before graduation, I gained invaluable experience on both the agency and corporate sides of PR. In 2008, I took the leap to start my own business, co-founding Serendipit Consulting. Over 15 years, we grew it to a 40-person agency serving clients nationwide.

Throughout my career, I’ve helped clients secure trillions in positive media coverage across local, national and international outlets, while orchestrating hundreds of successful partnerships and campaigns. In 2024, I launched Proof Publicity with a vision to create a boutique, results-focused PR agency. I have the honor of working with a variety of amazing clients across the country with a small team of the best PR professionals.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like any entrepreneurial journey, there have been plenty of challenges along the way. Starting my first agency at 25 was both terrifying and exhilarating. While my age sometimes made it harder to be taken seriously, it also gave me the fearlessness to take risks and learn quickly.

Building a business with a close friend was incredibly rewarding – we grew Serendipit from a two-person operation to a team of 40 over 15 years. But even successful partnerships sometimes reach natural endings. Making the decision to take different paths was one of the hardest choices I’ve faced, but it led me to launch Proof in 2024. Starting fresh after 15 years wasn’t easy, but when something feels right, you have to trust that instinct.

I’ve learned that the key to navigating challenges is staying focused on opportunities ahead while honoring what came before. Success comes from staying true to your values and, importantly, always treating people with kindness – even when faced with difficult decisions
