Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Dewar.
Hi Matt, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My love for filming dates back to when I was in middle school racing motocross and filming with a GoPro almost daily. Fast forward to college – I spent a ton of time filming and training at a motocross track in Bozeman, Montana. This track was called Hyline Raceway. Now shut down and a distant memory, it is the place that built my racing career and enabled me to film some of my best motocross content. So now you know where the name comes from. Throughout my professional career, I’ve been a filmer and a business guy for two startups, one being the largest video licensing agency in the world, ViralHog. Since my previous interview with Shoutout Arizona, I have been able to take the leap into full-time entrepreneurship. I now film weddings in Montana during the summer wedding season there and Weddings/commercial gigs in the Phoenix area the rest of the time. I’m taking meetings, networking, timing, posting, and editing constantly. Now that things are finally rolling with Hyline Media, I’m more motivated than ever before.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When I started booking weddings this spring, I had no confidence to film a wedding by myself at the time. I knew it’d be a struggle, and I got extremely overwhelmed multiple times and even completely discouraged. In June, I hopped in my truck, drove back home to Montana, filmed over 20 weddings with Elevate Media MT and 6 of my own, which were leads he sent me, and I committed to months prior. I came back 10,000 road miles later with extreme confidence and knew I was never looking back. But that was tough; I stayed at various friends and family, was away from my girlfriend, and was worried about funds and my old truck breaking down constantly. My girlfriend did come visit me for a week, so I got to show her around Montana, and although it was a test for our relationship she saw the vision and has been nothing but supportive. I got thrown into an elopement and had to do both photo and video while hiking 5 miles each way; that was brutal, but at the end of the day, an amazing opportunity. It was doing things like that and believing that helped me break through that wall.
We’ve been impressed with Hyline Media LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Hyline Media is a video production service that specializes in wedding and event videography, marketing strategy and content, events, photography, and much more. We are known for their high-quality work and commitment to creating a fun and stress-free environment for our clients. Based in Phoenix, Arizona, with clients in both Arizona and Montana, our goal is to turn your visions into immersive films that will last a lifetime. I’ve been a videographer, editor, and marketing professional since the start of my career, and everything I’ve learned has set me up perfectly for this business.
I’m most proud both the quality of content and the reactions I get from the brides upon delivering their wedding films – things like “I cannot believe this is real, and I can’t wait to show this to our kids someday.” That is the feeling I want everyone I work with to have.
My history with videography, not being afraid of failure, along with my professional experience in working on the ground floor of startups sets me apart. I will always lean on my natural creative style and stay true to my core values of going above and beyond for every client. And I understand the importance of running a professional business in contrast to the work we do. I go out and film regularly and watch people who are better than me consistently. I’ve worked for free for successful people in the industry and soaked up every last thing they’ve taught me, which is something that not everyone is willing to do.
How do you define success?
Each of us has a vision in our head of what our ideal self is like: being fit, having the freedom and money to do what you want with your time, being surrounded by incredible friends and family, having high achievements, being able to help and give back, etc. At this point in my journey, finally committing to becoming that person and doing the work to inch closer every day feels like success to me. Having no regrets and living every day to the fullest while being the person who puts a smile on other peoples’ faces is success to me.
