Inspiring Conversations with Marcus Champoux of Bikewerkz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus Champoux.

Marcus, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started Bikewerkz in Seattle, Wa in 2009 as a way to help the large community of bicycle commuters who needed work on their bikes.

By being able to offer scheduled pick-up and delivery services, cyclists could ride to work, get their bikes serviced, and be able to ride home all on the same day. After leaving Seattle for Vermont to help run restaurants at a ski resort, I tabled the business. Because hey, ski mountain.

We relocated to Scottsdale about 5 years ago and I decided to restart the service here. With the sunshine and trail systems we have in and around Scottsdale, cycling is year-round despite the heat. I am a former hospitality professional who spent over 30 years in the hotel and restaurant industry.

I try to bring that level of service and quality to what I do today.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
There have been, and remain, a number of struggles.

Most prominent is the lack of available work and shop space. The current real estate market has priced out many small business owners who are looking for the opportunity to purchase or rent space.

Another challenge, due to not having a physical shop or storefront, is the inability to set up wholesale accounts. Having to purchase parts and supplies online or at local shops cuts into the margin.

The wide variety of online shops has made it a bit easier.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Bikewerkz?
Bikewerkz is a unique, valet-style, bicycle repair service catering to commuters, families, and cyclists in Scottsdale and the surrounding area.

We offer our pick-up and delivery service throughout the east valley with no additional fees, trip charges, or minimums. Honest service at affordable prices is our motto and is something that we are very proud of.

Our services range from simple repairs to full restorations and rebuilds. We specialize in fleet maintenance for corporations, hotels and resorts, and the hospitality industry.

What’s next?
We continue to grow year over year. The dream is, in time, to have a shop space that is open to the public and is a service-only business.

No bike sales, no branding, just professional bicycle service that is quick, easy, and affordable. We may play crazy music in the shop, however. The real estate market will need to cooperate- not holding my breath on that one.
