Inspiring Conversations with Maegan Blau of Blue Copper Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maegan Blau.

Hi Maegan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started Blue Copper Design in 2018 with the idea that design is for everybody. It came from my experience building a wheelchair-accessible home that fit my needs but still hard my style. I found myself being an advocate for how I needed my home to function and decided to offer that service to others. I have always been interested in interior design and now have the opportunity to combine beautiful spaces with barrier-free designs. Four years later, I am proud to say we have a successful interior design studio servicing people living with and without disabilities. The perspective of having a disability has allowed my creativity to flourish and has set us apart from other design studios. Much has gone into building my business, but the support of friends and family has been the most important.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think any road is smooth when you’re starting something new. Of course, there are ups and downs, triumphs and struggles. I think what is important is that you stay on the road and change directions when you need to. It has been a lesson I’ve learned in my business and continue to learn with every new challenge. That is the exciting stuff of owning a business, but it is also terrifying sometimes.

As you know, we’re big fans of Blue Copper Design. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
Well-designed homes can change people’s lives; Blue Copper Design is a full-service interior design studio specializing in barrier-free, adaptive, accessible, ADA & Universal Design. We combine barrier-free designs & beautiful interiors to elevate and empower our clients’ lives. We believe design is for everybody and offer several services at various price points.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
I am a believer in making your luck. Luck happens after long periods of chipping away at a goal. Luck is an interesting concept, and I think it’s more about showing up and being involved in a way that makes sense for your goals than spontaneous circumstances.
