Inspiring Conversations with Kayla Pinkerman of Splatter Batter Bakery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Pinkerman

Hi Kayla, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
After receiving my undergraduate degree in Biochemistry from Rollins College, I attended the University of Colorado Physical Therapy program and graduated with my Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2018. I started working as a pediatric physical therapist at Phoenix Children’s Hospital right after school and loved the connections I made with children and their families when they were going through very difficult circumstances. After working through the pandemic at the hospital, and following the birth of my child, I decided that I wanted to spend more time at home with my son and start my own baking business. Right about the same time, my mom and I decided to take a cookie decorating class and it turned out to be a blast! The cookies looked even better than I could have imagined and my husband suggested that I should start selling them. Flash forward 2 1/2 years and now I have a rewarding business selling decorated sugar cookies and cake pops for a variety of events including baby showers, bridal showers, birthdays, holidays and weddings.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The hardest part of starting my business was figuring out all of the necessary licensure, training and documentation that was needed in order to run a home bakery. Another hurdle to starting my business was finding customers. At the beginning, I was mostly making treats for my friends and family, but had to figure out how to get my name into the community. I took advantage of neighborhood Facebook groups, small community events and cold calling local businesses to start, while also building a social media page so prospective clients could see my work.

We’ve been impressed with Splatter Batter Bakery, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I run a home bakery that specializes in custom, decorated sugar cookies and cake pops. What sets me apart is my attention to detail and the relationships that I build with my clients. I work very closely with my clients to ensure their visions come through in the final product. I pride myself on making treats that are not only beautiful visually, but also taste great!

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory was going on road trip vacations with my family. We loved going to different baseball stadiums across the country and I loved getting to try foods, especially dessert, from other parts of the US. One of my favorite desserts was the famous pink cake from the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo, CA!
