Inspiring Conversations with Katelyn Wierenga of House of Healing Counseling and Consulting PLLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katelyn Wierenga

Hi Katelyn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
House of Healing Counseling and Consulting started on a piece of paper in a basement in Muskegon, Michigan in 2016 with myself (Katelyn Wierenga) and my husband (Brett Wierenga). We had just moved to Michigan and we were looking to find our purpose. We talked for hours that night and both shared our passion for people with the goal of running our own group therapy practice. Since then it has evolved immensely. I completed my Master in Social Work and my hours for clinical supervision to receive my License as a Clinical Social Worker and Clinical Supervisor in Arizona. Throughout that time, I worked in a number of different therapy practices from group to government and community agencies. During that time, I worked with numerous populations including substance use, complex trauma, physical, emotional and sexual abuse survivors, first responders, veterans, and a number of cultural backgrounds. I found a passion in serving young women struggled with trauma history and looking to regain their voice and power.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My road has been far from smooth. Along my journey there have been a number of obstacles from poor clinical supervision early on in my career, burn out due to lack of support in the community mental health environments, experiences of being built up by my leadership teams only to be demoted when I advocated for my clients and even to have my license threatened following my exposure of their toxic work environments resulting in a year of working with the board to both defend myself and protect my licenses in order to keep my dream alive. Through all of this I worked tireless to continue to provide the clients and community I love with unwavering support and quality care offering wrap around services to help them each meet their individual goals.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
July of 2024, we took the leap and opened our doors in Glendale as House of Healing Az making our little piece of paper a reality and have grown more quickly thank we could ever have imagined. As an agency, we work to find the individual, couple or family the therapist that is the best fit for them in the hopes to help them find a home on their therapeutic journey. We do this by offering a wide variety of services with a number of providers who each bring something special to the table. At the moment, we have myself, two contractors and an employee who all offer different modalities such as; Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing, Brainspotting, Sand Tray Therapy, Cognitive Therapy Processing and Animal Assisted Therapy, all in the form of either Individual, Family or Couples Therapy. Our newest program of Animal Assisted Therapy, while small, allows a non-conventional approach to therapy with a friendly dog named Floof and a bearded dragon named Mushu. We currently provide services ages 12 and up.

In order for a new client to request services we ask that they go online to our website, choose the provider they prefer if they know who that is or whomever has the availability they are looking for in order to complete a free 15 minute consultation that helps us gather basic information such as brief history, current services, goals for therapy and previous experiences with therapy. We accept a number of private insurances such as Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, and United Healthcare as well as their umbrella companies. At the moment we do not accept AHCCCS plans of any kind, but can accept cash pay at a variety of different rates based on the provider.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
The thing that matters most to House of Healing is providing a home for people looking to begin mental health healing journey by being accessible to as many people as possible. Everyone is different and has different needs in order to heal. We believe that this therapeutic rapport is the difference in if a person will feel safe enough to be open an vulnerable while being challenged and encouraged to explore some of the most uncomfortable parts of their lives. Without that therapeutic rapport while different therapy modalities can help, they won’t create the same impact. We meet this need by employing a wide variety of individuals from different cultures, backgrounds, worldviews and therapeutic approaches.
