Inspiring Conversations with Jennifer Mullins of Mullins Tutoring

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Mullins.

Hi Jennifer, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began Mullins Tutoring, Inc. in 2002, a year after moving to Phoenix from New York. At the time, I’d been working as a substitute teacher and saw students who needed one-on-one attention. In the beginning, my tutoring focused on math and reading for elementary students at my home.

Over time, I began getting requests for older students and subjects that I didn’t cover. For several years I had contractors that would travel to students’ homes. I also took math classes at Glendale Community College so that I was able to tutor high school algebra and geometry.

Unfortunately, with the economic crisis of 2008, I was unable to continue to offer this service. In 2013, I began working with military applicants, tutoring them on the math portion of the ASVAB entrance exam. I get great satisfaction in helping all my students gain confidence and proficiency in their education.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The two significant challenges that I faced were the economic crisis of 2008 and the pandemic.

With the 2008 financial crisis, I saw a decline in the number of people hiring tutors, which caused my business to shrink as I needed fewer contractors. Eventually, I went back to only tutoring students who could meet at my home. In addition, I had to make adjustments with the pandemic, such as offering to tutor online.

Finally, in September 2021, I began meeting with students in my home, following Covid-19 safety protocols.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Mullins Tutoring, Inc. offers one-on-one tutoring designed to meet each child’s individual needs and learning styles.

I talk with the parents first, deciding their goals for their child. For some children, it’s improving grades by focusing on specific classes they are taking. For other students, the focus is on improving reading and math skills.

I pride myself on understanding the different ways my students learn and adjusting my teaching style to best accommodate their needs.

When possible, I contact their teachers by email and keep track of their grades and missing assignments. Unlike other tutoring companies, Mullins Tutoring, Inc. does not offer a one-size-fits-all service.
