Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Johnson.
Hi Jason, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Jason started IBK9 at the end of 2020 after working many years as a law enforcement K9 handler and trainer. IBK9 started inside of his garage and over time grew to a fully staffed 27,000 sqft training facility, providing both a climate-controlled indoor and outdoor space for dog training. With a focus on advanced obedience and specialized skills, the facility quickly became a hub for dog owners seeking expert training for their pets. Jason’s dedication to the craft attracted a team of experienced trainers, each bringing their unique expertise to the program. As word spread about the effectiveness of their training methods, IBK9 began to host workshops and seminars, further establishing its reputation in the community. Today, Jason continues to innovate, incorporating the latest techniques and technology to enhance the training experience for both dogs and their handlers.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely wasn’t a smooth journey the whole time as Jason wanted to really take a dog first mentality when creating his training programs and one of the largest thing in the industry that he wanted to address was the board and train programs offered by most trainers offering a 2 week board and train or a 4 week behavioral modification board and train. Jason felt that limiting the dogs ability to progress at its own pace and not force the dog into completing trained behaviors was something he wanted to change. So he created a 4 week minimum program with the end date being when the dog was confident and successful regardless of how long that may take and there will be zero increase in cost for the length of the dog’s program. He also felt a crucial part of the dog’s success was the continuation of training after the dog went home, so instead of limiting the number of follow-up sessions, he offered unlimited one-on-one follow-ups and group classes to make sure that the dog handler always had a resource to rely on for the life of the dog. This approach not only fostered a strong bond between the dog and its owner but also ensured that the training principles were reinforced in a real-world environment. By prioritizing the dog’s well-being over financial gain, Jason built a reputation that attracted like-minded clients who valued the same philosophy. As word spread about his innovative methods, he began to see a shift in the industry, with more trainers adopting similar practices focused on the dog’s individual needs. Ultimately, Jason’s commitment to a dog-first mentality not only transformed his business but also contributed to a broader movement towards more humane and effective training methods.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Our business is all about training every single dog, but what really sets us apart is our dedication to helping those dogs that others have overlooked. The underdogs, if you will. We specialize in behavior modification, particularly with dogs that may pose a risk due to aggression or extreme behavior issues. These challenging cases are our specialty, and we take great pride in helping families who may have lost hope in finding a solution for their reactive dogs. By teaching them the necessary skills and techniques, we empower them to effectively manage their dogs and move past any past traumas. Additionally, we work closely with local dog rescues to train and prepare dogs that require extra support for adoption. Whether they’ve been rescued from euthanasia lists or difficult situations, we are passionate about partnering with rescues to ensure these dogs find loving forever homes.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Seeing the impact our company had had in the lives of our community and the harmony we created in families’ households with their dogs, we felt a profound sense of purpose. Each wagging tail and joyful bark served as a reminder of why we started this journey in the first place. As we continued to engage with local families, we discovered new ways to enhance the bond between pets and their owners. Together, we envisioned a future where every home could experience the unconditional love and companionship that only a dog can provide.
