Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Fernandez.
Hi Heather, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have always had a soft spot for helping others in need. I had previous struggles with addiction in my youth and got sober when I was 20. When I was newly sober, I had the opportunity to work with other women who were also getting sober. I held space, listened to their stories, and witnessed tremendous growth and lights come on within these women. It was then that something clicked, and I thought to myself, “I want to do this as a career.” When I started school, I didn’t know what my result would look like. I just took classes that interested me. I ended up with a psychology major, a minor in family studies from ASU, and later a masters in marriage and family therapy. I worked in community mental health, providing in-home services for families involved with the department of child safety. I was exposed to various traumas, human experiences, and stories of redemption and triumph. I then worked in private practice, where I got the opportunity to explore and begin to fine-tune my skills as an EMDR therapist. When time slowed down collectively in the spring of 2020, I felt the pull to open my own business “someday” so I could be more available for my family. One year later, with the supportive push from my husband, I opened up Heart Centered Counseling Services.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I did everything myself, so there were mistakes along the way! In the beginning, I thought I would puke so many times due to being scared, but eventually, I got used to it and realized that I would be ok and not die. In the beginning, some of the best advice I got was to take imperfect action. I’m now learning to lean more on my community in my second year.
We’ve been impressed with Heart Centered Counseling Services, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I provide individual, couple, and family therapy in Gilbert. I see teens and adults. I like to help people become aware of their patterns of thoughts and behaviors to change and deepen relationships with themselves and others. EMDR therapy is my jam, and people defiantly seek me out for that modality. However, I use other modalities as well. When working with clients, I do my best to come from my heart space. I love when clients say, “wow, I’ve never told anyone that before” or “it feels so good to let that out/go finally.” Yes!!!! It is always an honor to be that person and hold space for awareness, expansion, and release. I strive to provide a safe and relaxed environment as most people are nervous during their first session. I use humor, enjoy teaching, and want to be your hype woman until you can learn to be your own hype person.
What are your plans for the future?
I am looking to expand my practice and take on a few part-time therapists this year. I only have so much time that I can give to clients without sacrificing time and energy from my family. I mean, I went into business for myself to be with my family more! One thing that’s come out of the pandemic is the normalization that it’s okay not to be okay and seek out support. I want to continue to be a support to the community and continue to grow as a therapist and professional.
