Today we’d like to introduce you to Gregory McLarty.
Hi Gregory, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2008, I was working as the office manager of a rental car company. I was also very involved in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitions and training.
While discussing life with my jiu-jitsu instructor and friend, Gustavo Dantas, he commented that he didn’t think I was happy with my career. I had never really thought about it before, but for some reason, it stuck with me. Within a month, I had quit my job and was in college for the first time. It was daunting because I was 28 years old and knew I had 8 years of school in order to get my doctorate in physical therapy.
I graduated from Northern Arizona University in 2016 and worked at three different clinics before deciding to open my own in 2019. I had some good experiences with those clinics but wanted to be able to treat my clients in the ways that I knew worked. Working for other people, this was sometimes inhibited. It has been going great and I was lucky enough to expand into a new office in January of 2022!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has been fairly smooth, but parts of the pandemic have been scary. The pandemic started about 8 months after I opened but working in a small space, with limited clientele, actually brought people to me during those tough times.
I was originally working part-time at another clinic but ended up getting laid off during the pandemic. The day following my layoff, the schedule at Control Physical Therapy tripled and stayed fairly consistent over the past year. So, every bump in the road actually ended up helping me in the long run!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
At Control Physical Therapy, we provide a very personal, customized approach to treatment. Every visit is focused on getting some meaningful changes. We try to get people back to doing what they love to do, as quickly as possible.
We treat low back and neck pain, sports injuries, and limitations, balance issues, vertigo, age-related limitations, and provide treatment before and after surgery in order to make the surgical process as smooth as possible. In order to do this, we use a combination of hands-on therapies and specific exercises. We try to make the visit work in ways that don’t just mimic what you could be doing on your own at home.
I’m most proud of the response that we’ve had from the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community, they’ve really embraced what I have to offer, so I’ve been lucky enough to treat people from over 20 different gyms. We’ve been lucky to see patients from many other walks of life as well.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
It’s simple but I think of success as being happy with what you do every day.
