Today we’d like to introduce you to Eni Veamatahau. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Eni Veamatahau’s journey with Island Boba began with the desire to share his wife’s beloved Tongan drink, otai, with a wider audience. With the support of his family, they established Island Boba, with Eni’s daughter, Maloti, contributing to the shop’s name.
Eni embarked on a 7–8-month R&D process to understand the Boba Market specifically in the East Valley and surrounding areas. Within that process, he on-boarded a co-founder in the journey with Brisco, and then things were moving quickly to create a unique menu infused with island and Spanish influences, setting Island Boba apart from other boba shops in the Valley. Eni and Brisco created a menu to showcase drinks and craft beverages that were favorites with flavorful tradition; 1 was Mango Otai, and the other was his wife’s Horchata! Both were replicated and made deliciously with love. Their focus on crafting individual drinks with high-quality ingredients aimed to raise the bar in the local boba market, catering not only to regular boba drinkers but also to many newcomers. The creative influence of island boba is to bring the islands to you and bit of Hawaii in the valley as you start or end your day with us! Whether if it’s a warm “hi welcome in” when you enter or a “have a great day” when you leave with an awesome haircut/hairdo!
The commitment to sourcing ingredients exclusively from local businesses within Arizona highlighted Island Boba’s dedication to supporting and contributing to local entrepreneurship. The concept of Island Boba is to make 1 drink at a time and not have batches of drinks made prior to appease wait times. We take our time making quality drinks with quality ingredients. our ingredients have a LOCALS ONLY mentality. Meaning we strive to only work with LOCAL-owned businesses within Arizona to help contribute to and support local entrepreneurship! Whether if it’s a local macaron maker, to the best malasadas in the Valley with Repeka and Wikiclcous Chandler, or Twisted Honey with our Local Honey needs! We even source our oranges from the Orange Patch in Mesa! We’re about creating a vibe within our drinks, to our music, to the great customer service we give every time!
Eni noticed a low bar of quality standard in the valley on great drinks being made in the boba market and how it’s only attracting consistent boba drinkers and excluding “new” potential boba enthusiasts. Menus were confusing, customer service was lacking with a “you don’t know what you want attitude,” and owners of boba shops were tone-def with educating the public and creating a welcoming environment for new boba guests.
Their unique location inside Pallet Collective and their customer-centric approach, as reflected in their “bringing the menu forward” motto, aimed to create an inviting and engaging experience for their customers. Our purpose is to surprise you with our unique location, being inside of Pallet Collective to be one of the best Boba shops in the valley’s hidden gems! We’ve created a “bringing the menu forward” motto where we don’t want the menu behind us and you figuring it out; we bring the menu forward with our chalkboard Hawaii influence vibe so we can talk about it side by side and walk through the menu together.
With Island Boba breaking the 1-year benchmark on Jan 6th of 2024, there has been an addition of their third partner, Sammy, from a proud Palestinian & Syrian background and close family member to Eni. Sammy will be responsible with outbound events, staffing, and operations for Island Boba.
Island Boba is now poised for a year of expansion, market outreach, and networking throughout the valley. Their enthusiasm for sharing joy through their drinks and partnerships promises a bright future for Island Boba.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been a crazy road if anything. Building relationships across the valley, understanding the boba market, and thinking of creative ways to market a Boba Shop in the Food and Beverage space.
Struggles with staffing, finding the right team members to fit our Island Vibe, and shifting to seasonal markets of hot, cold, slow days, busy days, etc.
At the end of the day, we’re creating our own brand and market with boba and unique craft beverages, so that’s a hard road on its own, but we have some great plans this year and how we’re moving forward.
We’ve been impressed with Island Boba, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
-Location – were inside of Pallet Collective where it’s majority salons and barber shop. Not knowing the best boba shop in the valley is inside.
-Locals Only – we are true to keeping money close and within Arizona. Using local farmers, entrepreneurs, and businesses. If you’re local, we would love to network and share the vibe!
-Bringing the Menu Forward – our motto on ordering. We have chalkboard menus like the islands, and we bring it forward vs having it behind you at the counter. We want to help you order and give you recommendations vs having you guess a drink that you won’t or may not like.
-Unique Menu – Tongan Mango Otai, Taro Ube, Horchata, Flavorfull blends, and Local Energy Influences!
What were you like growing up?
Eni Veamatahau and his partners, Brisco and Sammy, come from diverse cultural backgrounds, each with a strong foundation in faith, family, and hard work. Eni, a first-generation Tongan, was influenced by his traditional, conservative, and faith-based Polynesian upbringing, with his mother being a major source of inspiration. Brisco, a first-generation Mexican immigrant, grew up in a family-oriented environment with a strong emphasis on God and family. Sammy, a first-generation Palestinian immigrant, was raised in a family where entrepreneurship and artistic expression were valued, with his mother being an entrepreneur in the floral industry and his father an artist.
Their shared values of faith, family, and hard work have influenced their approach to business, with the trio bringing their unique cultural perspectives and experiences to the creation of Island Boba. This diverse background has likely contributed to the shop’s commitment to community, local entrepreneurship, and providing a welcoming environment for all customers.
