Inspiring Conversations with Charles Jeans of Safe House Home Inspectors

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charles Jeans.

Hi Charles, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am originally from California, moved here when I was about 10. I lived in Tucson with my father. I came from what you could call humble beginnings. I always liked tinkering with things and working with my hands and that lead me into the civil construction and oil field sectors. I was never a great employee though, I always knew I wanted to start my own company so when I worked for others I always had ideas and thoughts on how to improve processes etc. Eventually, I reinjured my spine and after the second surgery manual labor was no longer an option for me. It was a blessing honestly, it forced me to finally take the plunge and start Safe House Home Inspectors.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t know if anything great or worthwhile is easy or goes smoothly. One of the biggest obstacles for me was how do I stand out. There are a lot of qualified inspectors in the valley. I knew what made Safe House Home Inspectors different and better, but starting out nobody else did. So getting the message out and showing everyone in the real estate industry that our customer service, our reports, and our general outlook on the home inspection process was better, and unlike anyone else in Arizona was definitely one of the more difficult parts of starting my company.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I started Safe House because I wasn’t happy with the inspection industry, both how it was viewed and how it was being operated. Inspectors where perceived as the bearers of bad news or the guy that could hang up a deal. Most home inspectors weren’t taking the time to tailor an experience to the buyer that made it the best experience for them. I am changing that, we really specialize in first time home buyers because our reports and the way we present is so educational, I take the time to make sure the buyer understands what we are talking about, explanations, images, graphics. I even partnered with Carson Dunlap which has the largest residential technical reference guide in the nation so that all of that information is contained within the report and readily available and easily understandable for the client. We also became licensed and starting offering more ancillary services. We provide our own termite inspections, we even do sewer scoping now! Bringing all of these services in-house insure the quality I expect, and again makes things easier for the realtor and buyer.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Open up. The more I open up, the more opportunities I find. Be it on social media or in person. I have met some pretty amazing and talented people just because I said hello. That in turn has led to me improving myself, my company, everything. When you open up and have a goal, you attract those same type of people, ones you can learn from and or work with to better both of you.
