Inspiring Conversations with Brinton Colburn of State 48 Landscape / Wylde Salon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brinton Colburn.

Hi Brinton, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hooligans Coffeehouse began as a wild idea from childhood friends. When Logan Antelman first floated the concept, it felt unexpected—but the idea stuck. We knew it would only work if Adam Holliefield, with nearly a decade in specialty coffee, joined the team. Within a year, the three of us opened our doors in December 2024.

Growing up together in 1990s Gilbert, we spent our days skateboarding, surfing, and generally making mischief. Opening next to Revel Surf and an indoor skatepark felt like a full-circle moment. From the start, our goal wasn’t just to sell coffee—it was to create a space that reflected our roots, our love for community, and our slightly rebellious spirit.

Launching while balancing full-time jobs and family life was no small feat. We leaned on a strong team, divided responsibilities, and supported each other to make it work. Seeing successful entrepreneurs in our lives, like Allison with Wylde Salon, gave us the confidence to take the leap together.

We’ve built Hooligans with intentionality—sourcing coffee directly from producers and roasters in Colombia to cut out middlemen, increase farmer income, and deliver a better product. And we’ve made it a place for more than caffeine: motorcycle meetups, car shows, live music, book signings, and latte art throwdowns all have a home here.

Our tagline, “caffeine-filled mischief,” isn’t just a clever line—it’s who we are. Just over four months in, the shop is doing better than expected, but our real measure of success is in the relationships we’re building and the community that continues to grow around us.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. We opened Hooligans while still working full-time jobs and managing busy family lives, which meant every week felt like juggling a dozen priorities at once. Adam compared it to being a freshman in college again—working full days and then cramming in everything else late into the night.

Like any new business, we faced the learning curve of building systems, managing a team, and keeping up with the unexpected—while still trying to deliver the level of service and experience we envisioned. We also launched with a clear vision to provide high quality coffee.

Despite the hurdles, those challenges pushed us to rely on each other, build a strong management team, and stay grounded in why we started—creating a community space with “caffeine-filled mischief” at its core.

We’ve been impressed with State 48 Landscape / Wylde Salon , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
We’re big believers in keeping our minds and bodies inspired. One book we keep coming back to is The Creative Act, which pushes us to think differently and approach our work with fresh perspective. We also use The Mind Journal daily—it’s a great way to stay grounded, intentional, and focused.

When it comes to listening, we rotate between A Million Ways to Make a Million Bucks and the Fit for Purpose podcast—both keep our entrepreneurial wheels turning and help us think bigger about what’s possible.

And staying active is a huge part of keeping our energy and creativity high. Surfing at Revel, hitting the sauna at Perspire, and training at Fox Fitness all give us the mental reset we need to show up as our best selves in business and in life.
