Inspiring Conversations with Brandon & Jordan Melito of Mastermind Mechanics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon & Jordan Melito.

Hi Brandon & Jordan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Growing up in France, I remember being obsessed with motorcycles from the youngest age. Every birthday my parents knew better than to gift me anything other than motorcycle-related things. After a few years of being in the U.S., I met a friend that was really into working on cars, and after being around him so often, I began to pick up on a few things. I ventured into a few shops, learning more and more with every mentor. At the last shop I worked at, I witnessed some things that didn’t sit right with me morally and opened my eyes to how corrupt some people can be. After watching my parents own their businesses growing up and now having that last shop experience under my belt, I knew I was better off being my boss. This experience motivated me to make it a point to become an honest mechanic with the customers’ best interests at heart. I began working on friends’ cars, then family of friends, until I decided enough was enough and printed some business cards. Since then, I haven’t looked back. Mastermind Mechanics has also become mobile! This is the newest venture we have begun, bringing nothing but positive feedback to the business! We plan to expand the mobile business and open a couple of storefronts around the valley!

You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been fairly smooth?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all. My journey has been an uphill battle, simply starting with the fact that my family and I are immigrants from France. There are a lot of legal boundaries that can potentially limit foreigners from executing or producing the life that we all dream of. All that aside, we have learned to find answers or make an answer when we can’t find any. On the business aspect of things, there are a few challenges. From the beginning, having the capital to invest back into our company to better our customers’ experience has been a huge challenge. Doing our best to make this happen without loans or help from another person or institution while paying the standard bills of life while also trying to make sure we have a cushion for emergencies is a hard scale to balance, and I’m sure many can relate at some point. Another would be our attempt to break the stigma that mechanics are corrupt, and all repairs on a vehicle are going to break the bank. We want people to know that there are options! The final thing that ties back to my second point is the lack of value people see in my work, or more so, me. I’ve spent thousands of hours trying to gain as much knowledge in my career as possible. Still, to this day learning new things and new ways to do them. Spending hours in a hot garage with oils and grease all over you, getting frustrated over one bolt you’ve been trying to get out for an hour but not giving up or taking a shortcut because you make each job personal. Knowing how much heart I have into this business and other people not being able to or willing to see that and value that is my biggest struggle. But I would instead submit to an uphill battle than a downward slope.

What does success mean to you?
I would define success as continued growth each day. Success is pushing even harder on the most challenging days because that’s when it counts most. Success to me is being proud of what I have accomplished and acknowledging the steps forward that I have taken. Also, knowing that my customers are satisfied and feel safe after using my services is rewarding! Taking those risks that everyone else is scared of and seeing it all pay off in the end.
