Inspiring Conversations with Becka Gottschalk of BG Beauty

Today we’d like to introduce you to Becka Gottschalk.

Becka, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have always had a passion for the beauty industry since I was a little girl always wanting to do my mom and grandma’s hair, nails, and makeup. So when I made it to high school and had the option of attending a trade school for half the day, I just knew I had to choose cosmetology!

I have held a cosmetology license for 11 years now and have dibbled and dabbled in different areas of the industry. I have always held a corporate or office job and kind of just did beauty-related services as a side hustle. Recently, I have developed a strong interest in permanent makeup services. I was scrolling on Instagram one day and discovered lip blush.

Immediately, I went down a rabbit hole researching about it and looking for training. I realized how unhappy I am always working for someone else when I could be putting that energy into growing a business of my own and thought that lip blush and permanent makeup could be the way to do it.

I have a 3-year-old daughter that I enjoy spending time with, and felt that having a business of my own would allow me to create my own hours to be able to spend more time with her and my family. Fast forward two months, I have gotten certified in lip blush along with a few other services and opened up a studio in Mesa.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have only opened up my studio a month ago but during this time I realized that it is not as easy as I thought it would be. I thought by opening a studio I would just have clients flowing in — I was WRONG!

I’ve quickly learned how much I need to promote, network and put myself out there in order to get clients coming through the door. There are so many things that go into running a business and being your own boss is working 24/7 sometimes.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I specialize in being able to help women feel more confident in themselves.

My most popular service is lip blushing but I do offer other services such as Hyaluron pen lip filler, teeth whitening, and lash lifts. I am passionate about providing quality services and always looking for ways to expand my knowledge by keeping up with the latest techniques and continuing education to be able to do so.

I will be taking on micro-blading in the next few months to add that to my service menu as well!

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
The Covid-19 crisis hasn’t had too much of an effect on my business (as of yet).

But having worked in the dental field during the first two years of the Covid-19 crisis, I have learned about cross-contamination and the processes of disinfection, sanitation, and sterilization.

I have applied this knowledge to my business and ensure that I am able to provide a comfortable, clean space to serve all of my clients.
