Inspiring Conversations with Analuisa Rivera of Night Owl Infant Care PLLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Analuisa Rivera.

Hi Analuisa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My name is Analuisa Rivera. I am a wife, mother of 3, and founder/owner of Night Owl Infant Care PLLC. I am a Birth / Postpartum Doula, Licensed Nursing Assistant, and Newborn Care Specialist. I aim to provide the community with support and education in prenatal care, postpartum care, overnight newborn support, and much more. I started this business to support families in each transition of having a baby. I have worked in the hospital for many years in ED, Trauma, and ICU units. I transferred into the obstetric unit, working in labor and delivery, postpartum, antepartum, and NICU. I have always loved babies and gained much knowledge, skills, and education. Over the years, I have had parents expressing the need for support at home. After having my oldest daughter born at 34 weeks, staying in the NICU and coming home was tough; I struggled with Postpartum Anxiety and Depression. One of the leading causes of PPA/PPD is lack of sleep; if there were more resources in the community, we could prevent this. My goal is to be able to expand and support as many families as possible!

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In my years of working in women and infant services, I will always be grateful for the knowledge passed down to me from the amazing LNAs, RNs, residents, and attending doctors. When I was admitted to the hospital with my firstborn at 33 weeks, I was so worried; my aunt had passed away two days before I had given birth. It was a hard time for our family, especially my mother, who wanted to be a part of her grandchild’s birth but also lost her sister. My delivery wasn’t anything I would have thought it to be, and I would have loved to have a doula then. When my oldest was in the NICU, I developed severe postpartum depression and anxiety. Over the years, I began to gain more knowledge about maternity, how to have a healthy pregnancy and delivery—transitioning from the hospital to home, getting routine feedings, and understanding your newborn’s needs. Getting all the training and certifications became a longer process due to the financial aspect of starting a small business. Birth Work is its world with different niches like Birth assistants, Doulas, Lactation consultants, Infant massage specialists, etc. Looking for funding like grants or loans for continuing education or expanding has been a challenge. I aim to continue marketing, networking, and finding more recourses to support the community.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about Night Owl Infant Care PLLC?
I have always been passionate about caring for newborns and supporting their families from prenatal to postpartum. In my work and personal experiences, I have always seen the need for support during maternity and at home. When I worked as a Licensed Nursing Assistant in Women & Infants department, I had the privilege to cross-train in the Antepartum, Labor and Delivery, and Postpartum Units. I often see as much information parents receive in their prenatal visits, during labor, and at discharge. It is so much to retain, and most parents don’t remember a thing. There was still that need for education and support at home. At Night Owl, I provide a range of services; as a Birth Doula, I prepare, plan, support, and prepare for labor and be that voice of advocacy during your birth. As a Postpartum Doula, I will support you and the family from the day of discharge into your home transition. I am creating a routine for the family, helping with meals and all baby-related tasks (laundry, feeding, sleep). As a Newborn Care Specialist, I provide overnight support, including sleep conditioning, providing breastfeeding support, and creating a plan to establish a healthy sleep routine. I am very proud of the number of mothers, fathers, and families I have been part of such a beautiful, powerful, and life-changing time. Growing up in the Dominican and Puerto Rican culture, there was always a group of mothers, wives, and grandmothers who supported you throughout the pregnancy to birth and the postpartum period; you had a village of love and wisdom with Night Owl Infant Care supporting as many families as possible to make a difference in our community one family at a time.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those just starting.
I love networking with other birth workers in the community, hearing stories, and building long-term relationships. When I was getting ready to launch Night Owl, I was amazed by the advice and support I received from local doulas and Newborn Care Specialists. Whenever I can talk with anyone just starting their journey, I am here to give resources and a listening ear and support them and their goals. When I started, I was anxious and worried about how this career change would affect my family and our life. I wish I had the confidence I have now. Then this is why I always encourage all Birth workers to do their research for education programs, network, and continue to push through. To educate and support others in their journey to creating a small business.
