Today we’d like to introduce you to Alissia Zenhausern.
Hi, I’m Dr. Alissia Zenhausern, but my patients call me Dr. Zen for short. I am a naturopathic doctor and the founder of NMD Wellness of Scottsdale, a premier private practice that focuses on helping women in their 20s and 30s take a proactive approach to their hormone health. I originally became a naturopathic doctor because although I loved medicine, I truly felt as though there was a critical part of medicine that was missing. I wanted to provide patients with not only a holistic and whole-body approach to their health but, I wanted to really educate women about their health and their hormones.
Too often, patients are told, “everything looks fine, see you in a year” without any explanation of what tests were ordered, is being on birth control my only option? Are there any things I should be doing in my 20s and 30s to maximize my health for years to come? At NMD Wellness of Scottsdale, I have had many opportunities to see patients make miraculous changes in their health from reversing their symptoms of PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome), getting pregnant naturally after being told IVF was their only option, getting off of a variety of medications including antidepressants, anti-anxiety meds, PPI (antacids), and so much more. Aside from seeing patients in our Scottsdale office, I have loved working with the press and have been featured as a lead wellness expert in a variety of publications, including Shape, Instyle and Forbes.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Healing isn’t linear and neither is building your own business. As a naturopathic doctor, I went to school to become a doctor and thought school would be the hardest thing I would ever do but, it wasn’t until I decided to open NMD Wellness of Scottsdale that I realized running a successful business would be the hardest thing I would ever do. At 27 years old, with limited business experience, I decided to open the doors to NMD Wellness of Scottsdale and trust me, it wasn’t easy. I spent hours learning everything I could about business.
I read every book, listened to every podcast and talked to anyone and everyone who would listen. It wasn’t easy but I have learned so much along the way. It was important to me to stay true to my mission. I wanted to help empower women about their health and I wanted to make medicine easy and accessible. As a millennial myself, it was important to me to provide patients with individualized care options. I didn’t want patients to feel like just another patient, I wanted them to know I was truly invested in their journey and I would be there to cheer them on along the way. It was time we modernized naturopathic medicine.
We’ve been impressed with NMD Wellness of Scottsdale, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
NMD Wellness of Scottsdale is a premier naturopathic practice that focuses on helping women in their 20s and 30s take a proactive approach to their hormone health. Some of the conditions we treat include Infertility, PCOS, Endometriosis, thyroid disease (Hashimoto’s and Grave Disease), Gut Health as well as adrenal health. We use comprehensive laboratory testing to get to the root cause of your symptoms. Rather than using a “pill for every ill”, we believe taking a holistic approach to your health is the best way to maximize your health.
We see patients for 1-on-1 care in our Scottsdale office and also provide other amazing services, including our Fertility Foundations online course and Fertility Optimizer 28 Day Meal plan for those who may not be able to travel to our Scottsdale office. It is my ultimate goal to help provide as many women as possible with the care they so desperately deserve.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Surrounding yourself with like-minded, passionate women is truly the key to a successful business. One of the best pieces of advice I ever got was to approach a potential mentor in a way where you can help them, rather than going straight in with ways they can help you. It’s important to find people who lift you up, see your vision and want to see you succeed.
Also, remember to listen to your intuition. Networking shouldn’t feel like another job, if it does, you may not be networking in the best way for you and your business. It should feel organic and exciting and something you look forward to. Networking should be about really getting to know other people, not about blurting out your elevator pitch mid-sentence. Take the pressure off yourself (and others) and simply enjoy getting to know those around you. Business and referrals are made by people who know, like and trust you.
